Brooks opened its season with a resounding 60-18 victory over St. Mark's. Freshman Jason Gold, a first-year wrestler, won his high school debut at 106 and North Andover's Jake Gottfried looked impressive at 195 with a pin in 1:11.

Phillips Exeter freshman A.J. Pedro of Methuen was the top local placer at the Prep nationals at Lehigh University yesterday. He placed third at 152 pounds, winning 7-5 in the consolation finals. His only loss in the tournament was to Blair Academy's Mason Manville in the semifinals. Manville later became the 152-pound champion.

Brooks got titles from Andrew Konovalchik and Nate Gibeley and rolled to the New England Prep wrestling title yesterday. 

Andrew Konovalchik may have been the star of the day, but it was definitely a team effort by the Brooks wrestling team yesterday.

Brooks placed in all 14 weight classes on its way to its first Kelsey Graves Independent School League title since 2005.

Malden Catholic star Tyler Sifferlen of North Andover, a UMass Lowell recruit, scored four points in yesterday afternoon's 5-3 win over St. John's but was hurt late in the game. He was caught on a big hit and tended to by trainers. A teammate helped him off the ice. MC coach John McLean tweeted at about 2:30 p.m., "We’ll have to take him to the doctor to see if he has a concussion and go from there. He's conscious and sitting up."

Brooks improved to 13-1 with a rout of BB&N, 70-9. North Reading's Chris Cervizzi had the fastest pin of the day, in 1:12 at 16o pounds.

The highly regarded Brooks wrestling team opened its season with a 72-12 romp over St. Mark's. Freshman Nick Konovalchik began his high school career with a first period pin.
