Warriors fight hard

The Andover boys tennis team played a great matched against talented Westford, but was on the wrong end of three three-set matches in a 4-1 loss. David Grossman played well but fell in three sets at first singles, and Sam Feng and Bryan Hun Htun won at first doubles.

NECC destroys Bunker Hill

The Northern Essex baseball team scored an astounding 21 runs over the first two innings in an eventual 26-1 rout of Bunker Hill that was stopped after five innings. Lawrence Leo Romero had a home run, three hits and six RBIs, and Beverly's Spencer Brown hit for the cycle and drove in three.

No. 1 rally

 

Playing in the No. 1 slot, North Andover senior Paul Pfordresser rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the third set to prevail 7-5 to key North Andover's season-opening 3-2 win over Central Catholic. Matt Whidden was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at third singles for the Knights, who were 14-2 last year. Impressive freshman Zach Channen was a 6-4, 6-4 winner for Central at No. 2 singles.

Astros fall in state title game

It was a terrific season for the Pinkerton boy's tennis team, but it ended one win short of its ultimate goal. The Astros (16-1) suffered their only loss of the season on Tuesday, but it just happened to be to powerhouse Bedford, 5-4, in the state championship game.

Camino delivers

Andover knocked off perrenial power Shrewsbury, 3-2, to close the regular season with a 16-2 record. With the match tied at 2-2, it came down to No. 1 singles and Javier Camino posted the 6-7, (5-7), 6-0, 6-2 victory. Coach Mike Wartman said, "Javier elevated his play and played a real smart match."
