Warriors bow out

Nitin Mahesh and Shane Huggins won at first doubles, but the Andover boys tennis team fell to Acton-Boxboro 4-1 in the Division 1 North semifinals. Jeff Birnenbaum played well, but dropped a three-setter and Eric Heath and Bjorn Merinder battled but fell in straight sets.

Astros finally cool off, fall to Exeter

MANCHESTER, N.H. — “We were a hot team coming in and we played well.”

That was the reaction of Pinkerton head coach John Pelkey after the 12-5 Astros lost, 6-3, to undefeated Exeter yesterday in the Class  L finals for boys tennis.

Warriors roll on

Andover cruised to a 3-2 victory over Boston Latin Academy in yesterday's Division 1 quarterfinals. Bjorn Merinder led the way out of the first singles spot as he's been doing all year with a 6-4, 6-4 victory, and the second doubles team of Andrew Mack and Randy Sartor won an unblemished match 6-0, 6-0.

Astros soar through semis

Pinkerton boys tennis easily dispatched Concord 6-3 in the Class L semifinals. Mark Mangini and Sam Eaton locked down the first and second singles spots with a pair of 8-5 victories then teamed to take first doubles,  8-6. Dan Kish and Mike Soltys were also double winners for the Astros, which faces Exeter in the finals tomorrow.

Lancers bow out

Londonderry fell to Bishop Guertin in the Class L quarterfinals, 5-4. Alex Burbine was a double-winner for the Lancers, taking first singles 8-1 and pairing with Tyler Palmieri to win first doubles 8-5. Londonderry finishes 11-4.

Andrew Mack keyed a 4-1 Andover victory over Boston Latin Academy out of the third singles spot with a 6-0, 6-0 win. Both doubles teams of Shane Huggins/Nitin Mahesh and Christian Waters/Injoong Yoon were perfect at 6-0, 6-0, as well.

Sweeping Central

Christian Waters, who went 6-0, 6-0 in third singles, led Andover in a 5-0 romp over Central Catholic. The doubles group of Andrew Gray and Graeme Johnson rebounded after being tested in the first game to win 7-5, 6-0. The Golden Warrior girls also beat the Raiders, 4-1, highlighted by Maggie Carter's 6-0, 6-0 win in third singles.
