Windham avenges tourney loss with big win

WINDHAM — For nearly a full year, David Crichton and his Windham teammates waited for another shot at Trinity.
“Last season they sent us home (from the playoffs),” said the senior lineman. “So wanted revenge for what happened last year. We were prepared and wanted to get them back.”
Yesterday, the Jaguars more than avenged last season’s Division 4 semifinal loss.
Behind the legs of Kurtis Jolicoeur and the arm of Brendan McInnis, Windham accumulated 504 yards of total offense on the way to handing Trinity just its second loss of the season, a 52-20 trashing.

“We’ve been waiting for this since we had to say goodbye to our seniors on their field last year,” said McInnis. “This is the culmination of all those days of hard work and all the long practices in August. To know we can not only compete but win a game against a team like this is huge.”

After two early trips into the red zone resulted in no points, Windham (7-1) finally took the lead in the second when Troy Peters picked off a pass, and two plays later Guillaume Gauthier scored a 4-yard touchdown.

From them on, the Jaguars were hitting on all cylinders, scoring touchdowns on each of their final six possessions of the game.

McInnis continued his emergence as one of the state’s most dynamic players, connecting on touchdown passes to Anthony Gallo, Kellin Bail and Joey Frake, the last a 70-yard bomb, while Bail, Jolicoeur and Shane Lafond added rushing TDs.

“We knew that we could win,” said Jolicoeur. “But to come out and do it is just great. We knew we just had to keep going and going, and when Brendan hit Joey for that long touchdown we knew it was looking good.”

Trinity could find nothing to slow Jolicoeur, as the fullback shredded the Pioneers’s interior defense to the tune of a career-high 180 yards and the score, 124 in the second half. His previous high was 102 yards last week.

McInnis, meanwhile, threw for 180 yards on a slick 10-for-14 passing including four completions to Bail, and rushed for 84 more yards.

“We knew we could move the ball on them,” said McInnis. “But we had to finish possessions. By the end of the game we were finishing every drive, and that’s what we want.”

After an early score, the defense also locked down, forcing three turnovers that all resulted in touchdowns. Peters and Bail each picked off a pass, and Bail added a fumble recovery. Jolicoeur, who combined with Davis Potter on a key sack, also had a pick that was disallowed due to a penalty away from the play.

“The defense really stepped up,” said Crichton. “The defensive backs made some huge plays and the linemen stayed strong. Not we get out first home playoff game.”

The Jaguars now close out the regular season with the first night game in school history when they host Sanborn on Friday, before moving into the Division 2 playoffs with a home game. The opponent has yet to be determined.

“It feels just great,” said Bail. “We knew they would be tough, so to take them down is a big deal. Now it’s Sanborn and the playoffs.”
