Newburyport Clippers Girls Basketball '08-'09

Newburyport 45, Amesbury 38

The future, as in next season, looks pretty bright for Newburyport, who after a slow start finished with a three-game winning streak.

The Clippers were again led by a balanced scoring attack with Lindsey Tomasz's 11 points and 10 rebounds, Caitlin Hill's 10 points, and Sam Baribeault's 10 points. Keri Salvatore had a game-high 18 points for Amesbury.

Newburyport 61, Triton 53

For the first time this year, Newburyport won back-to-back games as the Clippers were lead by a balanced scoring attack of  four girls in double figures. The win also officially eliminated Triton from playoff contention.

Senior co-captain Caitlin Hill led Newburyport (6-10) with 18 points. She converted on 8 of 10 free throw attempts — all of which came in the fourth quarter. Freshman Beth Castantini tallied 11 points and 10 rebounds. Sam Baribeault added 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Lindsey Tomasz had 10 points, 12 rebounds and six steals.

In a game that came down to a few plays at the end, Wilmington was able to pull of a tight win, 61-57. Coach Neil Reardon said he was very pleased with the effort. Sam Baribeault led the Clippers with a season-high 18 point (3 3-pointers), Beth Castantini had 13 points, Lindsey Tomasz had a nice overall game with 12 points, and Sam Leahy had eight points.

Emerging as a rising star, freshman Beth Castantini had a terrific game at both ends of the court with 16 points and five rebounds as Newburyport had a good team effort to knock off Lynnfield, 51-42.

Knights trounce Newburyport

Nicole Zahoruiko poured in 25 points, half of the Knights' total output, and also nabbed 14 boards as the North Andover girls basketball team topped Newburyport, 50-37. Nikki Karalis added seven points, including North Andover's only 3-pointer, and Katie Maroney shut down Newburyport's leading scorer in addition to recording four points.
