Pentucket lost its first two boys tennis matches then saw its second doubles team fall behind 3-0 in the third and deciding set. Both times the Sachems rebounded as Logan Sherwood and Will Kopaciewicz fought back for a 6-4 final-set victory to knock off Newburyport, 3-2.

Ryan McAuliffe fanned 16 batters but the big news from North Reading's 9-1 win over Newburyport was Frank Carey earned his 700th win. He's only the second manager in New England high school history with over 700 wins.

North Andover's boys basketball team grabbed a share of the MVC large school title by surging past Newburyport 60-54. Isaiah Nelson and Chris Bardwell were a two-man wrescking crew with 21 and 18 points respectively for the Knights (16-4).

'Huge' victory

 

The Whittier/Amesbury hockey team moved a step closer to the state tournament by defeating Newburyport for the first time since 2006, 5-3. Anthony Licciardello had two goals and an assist for Whittier (8-8-1), which got goals from all three lines, and Tabor Smith had three assists.

In one of the better displays of two-way team defense the CAL has seen in a while, North Reading survived a suffocating effort from Newburyport for a 32-25 victory. Tommy Hogan and Mike O'Brien had nine points apiece for the unbeaten Hornets, who clinched a share of the league title with the win.

Pat Bjork's basket on a nifty move in the post with 2 seconds remaining tied Georgetown's game against Newburyport at 58-58. 

Christian Gesualdi then banked a layup to put the Royals ahead for good in the final 10 seconds of overtime.
