Reggies fall short in North quarterfinals

WEST ANDOVER — As he walked to the locker room following the game, Greater Lawrence basketball coach Dan Habib stopped to embrace a pair of players in tears, consoling one another.

“I told them that they can be sad right now,” said Habib. “It will hurt, it is going to be tough. But I told them that when they leave the locker room I wanted their heads to be high because this was a great year.”

Greater Lowell beat Greater Lawrence 64-61 in overtime to advance to the State Vocational Tourney Large School title game. The Gryphons and Reggies had split their regular season matchups. Alexis Estrella scored 21 points with five 3-pointers, Frankely Estrella scored 18 points and Oscar Reynoso added 14.

Greater Lawrence's surging boys basketball team (17-2) won its 10th straight, 69-58 at Lynn Tech. Alexis Estrella scored 17 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter.

What a difference a month has made for the Greater Lawrence boys basketball team.

Back on Jan. 10, the Reggies were defeated by Greater Lowell 59-49, dropping to 7-2 and in a hole in the Commonwealth Conference large division.

Greater Lawrence's boys improved to a startling 15-2 with a 57-29 romp over Whittier Tech, not allowing the Wildcats more than eight points in any period. Joshua Suarez had a season-high 10 points and four rebounds and, in his first start, Luis Gonzalez, had five rebounds.
