Time runs out for Jaguars

After falling behind Portsmouth by as many as 20 points in the third quarter, Windham turned pressure defense into points to climb to within four with 1:16 left to play. Unfortunately, time and opportunities ran out for the Jaguars as they fell in the Division 3 semifinals for the second year in a row, 47-41. Amanda Schiebel led Windham with 13 points and Bernadette Connors was next in line with 9 points.

Jags beat No. 2 team

Bernadette Connors was giving up seven inches to 6-3 Portsmouth star Alicia Brown but she held her to three second half points and Windham knocked off the second-place Clippers 59-55. Kelsey Schiebel scored 21 points including four free throws in the final minute. Brianna Angelini had a big steal and two free throws with 30 seconds left. Clairee Putnam led all the Jags with 25 points.

A spate of fourth-quarter turnovers were costly for Windham as St. Thomas Aquinas came back for a 57-56 victory. Clairee Putnam contributed 17 points and five steals for Windham while Kelsey Schiebel had 19 points in the tight setback.

Marotta cited again

 

Merrimack College junior goalie Sam Marotta was named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season. He made 31 saves in the Warriors 1-1 tie on Friday night in Orono, Maine. In Saturday’s win, Marotta recorded 22 saves, leading Merrimack to the 3-2 victory. The win moved the Warriors into fifth place in Hockey East, two points behind Providence and Boston University with one game-in-hand on each team.
