No. 4-seeded Andover posted a 3-2 victory over No. 5 seeded-Boston Latin Academy in the Division 1 North quarterfinals in boys tennis.

Christian Waters won his No. 2 singles match 6-4, 6-2. 

Varun Penamatsa, who was filling in at No. 3 singles, posted a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win and Andover blanked Revere 5-0 in opening round play.

Andover and Central Catholic are developing a nice rivalry, playing for the MVC boys tennis title for the second straight season. Thanks to Evan Birenbaum and Justin Edelman winning a three-set war at first singles, the Golden Warriors defended their crown, 3-2. Another entertaining match came at second singles as Andover's Christian Waters and Central's Chris Bunker went back and forth before Waters broke a 5-5 second-set tie to win eight of the final 10 games.

Tyler Vaz and Colin Johnson had never played together at the varsity level but the Andover second doubles team pulled out a gritty 6-4, 7-6, 7-1 in a 4-1 win over Methuen.

Andrej Samardzec improved as his match went along, winning at third singles in Andover's 3-2 edging of Chelmsford. "Andrej had a strong baseline game and mixed things up well," said head coach Mike Wartman.

Evan Birenbaum had a deceptively challenging 6-0, 6-1 victory at second singles, shaking off a lot of deuce games against a strong Lowell opponent as part of Andover's 5-0 win.

Andover's doubles teams of Sameer Sangal-Sam Frykenberg and Larry Lee-Tyler Vazwon big in a 5-0 romp over Lowell.

Andover's boys tennis team knocked Central Catholic from the unbeaten ranks with a convincing 4-1 victory. Christian Waters hung on for a solid victory at second singles for the Warriors, who won their fifth straight match.
