Acquaviva takes second

Racing in one of the strongest fields in the state, Newburyport's Sam Acquaviva took second overall in the Bay State Invitational's Peter Conway race, running the 5K course in 16:09.54. He finished shortly behind Arlington star Ryan Oosting, and teammate John Lucey also placed 12th overall in 16:57.44. The Pentucket boys competed in the Scott Burdick race, placing fifth overall. Peter Lopata finished seventh overall in 16:46.90.

Sachems take third

Peter Lopata finished seventh overall out of 142 finishers to help lead Pentucket boys cross country to a third place finish at the Ocean State Invitational. Lopata finished the 5K course in 16:52, Sam Stys finished 26th in 17:38 and Colin Costa was 30th in 17:45.60.

Fast freshmen

The Pentucket girls cross country team took part in Saturday's Ocean State Invitational in Rhode Island, and the freshmen in particular had a standout day. Phoebe Rubio took second overall in the freshman race, running the 4K route in 16:24 for the 17th fastest time in course history, and she was followed shortly after by Brianna Whyman in eighth and Ella Edic in 14th. In the varsity race, Jess Galvin was the top finisher in 55th overall, completing the 5K course in 21:51.10.

Sachems keep rolling

Facing one of the toughest teams on their schedule in Groton-Dunstable, the Pentucket girls basketball team lived up to the challenge with a 45-32 win in the first round of the St. Mary's Tournament. Casey Hunt scored 13 points, Jess Galvin had nine on three 3-pointers and Maddie Doyle scored eight. Pentucket (19-1) will now face state power Arlington Catholic in the finals of the St. Mary's Tournament today at 5:30 p.m.

Georgetown places third at Interscholastic Meet

The Georgetown girls ski team enjoyed a terrific day at the Interscholastic Meet, placing third as a team with 582 points. The Royals were led by Newburyport's Margaret Cote, who finished ninth in the league with a time of 49.33.

O'Keefe's big jump

Pentucket sophomore Keegan O'Keefe leapt ahead of the field at Sunday's Auerbach Freshman-Sophomore Small School Meet, taking first in the long jump with a distance of 19-10. He also placed sixth in the 55-meter dash (7.03), and was joined near the top of the leaderboard by teammates David Gangemi (8th in 2-mile, 10:56.99) and Cory Foster (9th in 600, 1:32.61), along with Amesbury's Francisco Laracuente (5th in 55-meter hurdles, 8.93) and Triton's Keegan Ritchie (7th in mile, 4:54.33).

Sachems win Team Pentathlon

The Pentucket girls track team set a new school record in the team pentathlon at Friday's MSTCA Team Pentathlon, recording 3,173 points to place first out of 10 teams. Saige Tudisco broke her own school record to win the long jump (17-3 1/2), Madi Krohto won the high jump (5-1) and Ellison Seymour took second in the 55-meter hurdles (9.41).

Traffic woes made it a seven-hour trip there, but Phillips Academy was ready right off the bus, taking out Poly Prep Country Day School of Brooklyn, 3-0.
Poly Prep is the No. 3 team in New York State, according to Maxpreps.com, and Georgetown's Travis Lane simply dominated the Blue Devils, going the distance in the three-hit shutout, walking a pair and fanning give.

Bradford Christian takes title

While Brooks took the Class B boys title, the Bradford Christian Academy girls basketball team earned some hardware of its own. The Sentinels won the NEPSAC Class D championship in just their second year in the league, beating the Watkinson School of Connecticut 43-40. Haverhill's Mikaela Rogers scored 8 points and was named tournament MVP, and Jamayra Castro led the way with 12 points.
