The Brooks boys basketball team opened its season with a 51-point loss, to Northfield Mount Hermon, and coach John McVeigh was actually encouraged.

"That's probably the best team in the country," said McVeigh. "I actually liked our performance,"

Methuen's Peyton McGovern led the way with a 19:37 on Northfield's hilly 5K course as Phillips Academy shut out Northfield Mount Hermon 15-47. North Andover freshman Michaela Jones was two seconds back in second.

Cara Cavanaugh of North Andover had 16 points, Kate Hoey 17 points and Kasey Hartung of Haverhill 7 points but Phillips lost to NMH 54-51 in OT in the first Northeast 8 Tourney.

Phillips' 200 freestyle relay of Michael Camarda, David Cao, Joe Faller and Tim Wynter broke both the pool record, previously held by Exeter, and the school record, in Phillip's only home meet of 2014, a 102-63 victory over Northfield Mount Hermon. 

The Brooks boys basketball team had a challenging opener to say the least, falling to defending national prep champion Northfield Mount Hermon 97-51.

Brooks trailed 42-28 at halftime and narrowed the gap early in the second half before Northfield pulled away. Lavar Harewood led Brooks with 14 points.

Led by 141 yards for Ryder Strong, Phillips rushed for 328 yards as a team as the Big Blue pounded N.M.H. 50-6.

"We ran the ball very nicely and threw when we had to," said Phillips coach Leon Modeste. "Our offense was very out of sync last week. We just couldn't get anything done. This week we really showed what we can do."

Phillips Academy sophomore Anoush Shehadeh broke the home course record for the third time, running the 5K course in 17:18, 19 seconds faster than just two weeks ago as Phillips whippe Northfield Mount Hermon 19-44 to remain unbeaten.

Katie Kreider led the way with 16 points as Phillips Academy moved over the .500 mark (8-7) with a 46-42 victory over Northfield Mount Hermon.
