HAVERHILL — In one of the highest scoring games in the region in area history, Whittier held off Greater Lawrence 92-81.
"It was just up and down. Everybody is so athletic. It was a lot of fun to watch,'' said a hoarse Whittier coach Tom Sipsey.
The Reggies trailed by 16 early but behind Donald Celestin (area-high 41 points) tied it early in the fourth.
For all Celestin's brilliance, the Reggies could never take the lead. Whittier's 1-2 punch of freshman Ryan Grant (25 points) and 5-4 sophomore Gio Gomez (25 points, 17 free throws, 9 assists) made play after play and the surprising Wildcats won the game at the line.
Whittier (11-4) was 36 of 45 from the charity stripe while the visitors were 18 of 26.
"We were just mentally tough,'' said Sipsey. "We were making free throws and making plays.''
They had to make plays because Celestin was scoring at will.
"He's a lefty who can score from anywhere,'' said the rookie coach. "He was unconscious.''
This was a far cry from their first meeting when the Cats won 54-51 on Dec. 18.
The Reggies dropped to 3-10.
