Mary Fullerton is one of the most talented distance runners in the area, but things looked bleak because she was trailing Lowell's hotshot freshman Erin Donovan with a lap remaining in the mile. But Fullerton unleashed a ferocious kick to pull off the upset then the Hillies cruised in the mile relay to earn a season-opening, 45-41 victory.
Without Fullerton's heroics, the meet would have ended in a tie. To give an indication of Donovan's talent, she stunned the Hillies' Julie Solimine, one of the top runners from the region in years, at the EMass Division 1 class meet this fall.
"Mary just ran a great last lap to force the relay,'' said Hillie coach Mike Maguire, adding Fullerton ran a speedy 80-second final quarter en route to the impressive 5:33.3 victory. "It was just a good win against a quality runner.''
Making it even more noteworthy is Fullerton battled low iron problems in the cross country season.
Solimine took top honors in the two-mile, Becca Stabile was the class of the field in the 600 and Beth Fullerton, Mary's twin sister, broke the tape first in the 1,000.
The Hillies also got a crucial 1-2 finish from sophomore Kaleigh Fitzgerald and freshman Erin Connolly in the 300.
