Crowell brothers spark Pinkerton

LONDONDERRY — It’s not easy being the younger brother of one of the best wrestlers in New England, but Pinkerton freshman Cam Crowell is learning to adjust quite nicely.

Cam, whose older brother Collin is a returning New England placer and has lost just one match all year, wrestled a solid six minutes to earn a 4-2 decision at 189 pounds over Londonderry’s Mack Douglas to cap off the Astros’ 42-29 victory.

That improved Pinkerton to 11-8 while the short-handed Lancers dropped to 4-5.

“I think I’m getting better, but it’s tough being his (Collin’s) brother,” said Cam. “He’s a lot better than me ... if I try to wrestle him, it’s almost scary.”

Cam gave up a takedown in the first period to fall behind 2-0, and still trailed 2-0 after the second period, but he got a reverse early in the final frame and earned back points late in the period to claim the victory.

“I feel really nervous when he’s out there,” said Collin. “He’s getting better and he’s going to improve a lot when he wrestles more.”

Although he wrestled in the sixth grade, Cam gave up the sport for two years before returning this year. Now he’s committed to being the best he can be.

Collin, of course, did that long ago and has reaped the benefits. Last night, he cruised to a 17-1 technical fall in the first period and has been pretty much dominant all year.

Other winners for the Astros, who benefitted from four Londonderry forfeits, were 119-pounder Tanner Burke and 130-pounder Dave Owens. Burke earned a hard-fought 6-4 decision over gritty Dan Roger while Owens pinned James Chase in the last second of the match.

Londonderry, which has been depleted by skin problems and injuries, wrestled strong when given the chance.

Trailing 14-6, Lancer 125-pounder Tyler Wilson stunned Ron Beimel with a pin at 3:44, Joe Barr got a late reversal to tie his match and then won 7-5 in overtime at 140, Matt Cabezas recorded a 1:04 pin at 152 and Jake Tavano came on strong to defeat Steve Lord 16-10 at 171.

“I’ve been happy with the way we’re wrestling,” said Londonderry coach Jim Marron. “We just need to get healthy and get more kids on the mat.”
