ANDOVER | Andover needed a big win.

After dropping two of its last three games with a messy win over Dracut in the middle, the Golden Warriors finally came up with a clean victory, a 35-7 defeat of Haverhill last night on the new turf at Eugene V. Lovely Field.

"We really needed this one," said Andover tri-captain Sam Clark. "The offense did an unbelievable job and the defense had a few lapses, but came back strong and shut them out in the second half."

The Golden Warriors struck early and often, scoring touchdowns on their first five possessions of the game to put the contest away in the second quarter. Many of the starters exited during the third and Andover did not punt until the final possession of the game.

Matt Rayner came through with his biggest night of the season, catching three passes for 101 yards and a 25-yard touchdown from quarterback Mike Pierce. His previous season high was 84 yards against Dracut. It was his third career 100-yard receiving game.

Pierce played only three quarters, going 9-of-15 passing for 195 yards. That gave him 1,076 yards on the season, making him the first Eagle-Tribune-area quarterback to go over 1,000 yards for the year. The next best is Phillips QB Bryan Farris (562 yards). He also had TD passes to Rayner and Clark, tying him for the area-high (7).
