North Reading opened the season with just 18 players, but still managed to shock perennial Cape Ann League large power Pentucket on opening day. That kicked off a season-opening three-game winning streak.
But injuries and disciplinary problems have been a problem for the Hornets (4-6) as the year has gone on. They now look to end a high note with a victory over Lynnfield (2-8) on Thanksgiving Day.
If North Reading is to best the Pioneers, it will be on the back of Mr.. Everything, Darren Hartwell. After two years as a starting wide receiver, the 6-foot-2, 170-pound senior has been asked to play all over the field this year, logging starts at receiver, running back and quarterback.
“He’s just a tremendous athlete,” said Hornets coach Jeff Wall. “I was worried about putting him at quarterback, but he said, ‘Coach, I have always wanted to play quarterback.’”
Hartwell has caught 20 passes for 307 yards, rushed 58 times for 418 yards and completed 8 of 12 passes for 39 yards. He ranks 11th in the area in scoring with 10 touchdowns and excels both at safety and returning kicks and punts.
He expects to split time at quarterback with fellow senior Dino Rizzo, who returns after sitting out three games for violating team rules. A standout linebacker, Rizzo, began the year at running back before shifting to quarterback. Other impact players are two-way tackles Bobby Rosano and Ronnie Rossi and versatile first-year player Matt Barretto.
The Pioneers played well in their last game, a 35-21 loss to unbeaten Manchester Essex. Gino Cohee threw TD passes to Nick Roberts and Ryan Perkins in that one. Chris Grassi leads Lynnfield with eight TDs.
Lynnfield leads the overall series 29-20, but North Reading has won three straight by an 85-18 margin.
