Georgetown steps up to remain unbeaten

GEORGETOWN — Going into Saturdays home game against non-league Murdock, Royal head coach Matt Bouchard was unsure of how his defense would hold up against the hard-running Blue Devils. Georgetown had lost two of its starting defensive players in middle linebacker Chris Esposito and defensive tackle Eric Gesualdi.

However, the result was more of the same from Gerogetown as they dropped Murdock 28-6 with another big game from senior quarterback Joe Esposito. Esposito ran for 123 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Esposito got alot of help from wingback Anthony Conte who hauled in five passes of his passes for 80 yards and a touchdown on offense to go along with two key interceptions on defense. Esposito also threw for 128 yards and had an interception on defense.

“We did whatever we needed to get the win this week,” said Conte. “With guys out this week everyone needed to step up and I think we did that.”

Murdocks offense came out sporting a very tight wing-t formation and looked to run the ball heavily. Although the Royals were outgained statistically running the ball, the defensive unit held off Murdock for the majority of the day.

“When you play against a team that runs right at you, you must control the line of scrimmage and I thought we did that very well today,” said Bouchard

Playing for Gesualdi, junior Juan Llanos joined defensive lineman Nathan Brudnick and Matt Kumph for the great d-line play and linebacker Jeff McLaughlin filed in flawlessly in the middle for Chris Esposito. Cornerback Jamie Spears also made his presense felt by providing several big hits and the three interceptions between Conte and Joe Esposito helped hold the Blue Devils scoreless the rest of the game.

Murdock only struck on their opening drive, scoring on their fifth play from scrimmage but Esposito responded quickly less than two minutes later with a 60-yard sprint down the sideline for the score.

Midway through the second quarter Conte put the Royals up for good 14-6, with a 1-yard touchdown run. Just one play earlier Conte had made a spectacular diving catch landing on the 1-yard line for a gain of 20.

A scary moment in the third quarter happened when Murdock senior Alex Quintal was carted off the field with a neck injury after colliding helmets with another player. Quintal remained motionless for several moments and lost conscience before  regaining feeling in his extremities and giving the crowd a small wave before being loaded into the ambulance.

Gesualdi had gone down late in the week during practice with an injury and Esposito was not available for the game as the result of an “in house situation” as desribed by Bouchard
