KINGSTON - Pelham junior quarterback Ian Hoey can throw a good ball, but it's always nice when you get a little help from your receivers.

On Saturday, he got plenty. Mainly in the form of 6-foot-1, 180-pound Nicholas Milano.

A senior, Milano twice leaped over defenders to high-point the football and snatch juggling touchdowns. His two scores, combined with a stout defensive effort, helped Pelham earn its first win of the season, 32-13, over Sanborn.

When it wasn't Milano, it was 6-foot-3 Colby Travis doing damage. The junior finished with four catches for 55 yards and a touchdown. Junior Matthew Crowley also hauled in a 29-yard TD after catching a nice pass down the sideline and outracing his defender.

A top-notch performance by all of his weapons helped Hoey finish his day 15-of-22 passing for 214 yards and four TDs.

"I think they're big receivers, it's a tough matchup," said Pelham coach Tom Babaian. "It presents issues for the defense. So that's what we try to do and they do a great job."

Milano's two highlight-reel TDs set the tone early.

His first was a 23-yard pass that he out-jumped two defenders for, juggled, then eventually hauled in for the game's first score. Then after Sanborn (1-1) took a 7-6 lead when Matt Sarette hit Todd Dabreio for a 65-yard bomb, Milano caught an almost identical pass for his second TD - except this one was from 25 yards.

After his second TD, the Pythons never trailed.

"I was just trying to concentrate and go up there and catch it," said Milano. "It felt great.

"It feels really good to get a win this week. Coach instilled it into our head all week that this was a must-win game. We needed this win."

After allowing the one long touchdown, the Pelham defense was rock solid.

Leading 20-7 at the half, the Pythons started the second half forcing two three-and-outs and two fumbles on Sanborn's first four drives. Ed Shlimon, Eric Galloway, Tony Zolt and Zachary Jones all helped a defensive effort led by lone senior captain Brett Lindsay, who also rushed for 133 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries.

The effort helped the Pythons open a 32-7 lead early in the fourth.

"Overall, the kids played hard the whole game," said Babaian. "They played all 48 minutes instead of a couple of 24 minutes like we've done in the past. They did a hell of a job today."

The Indians would score against the Pelham reserves when Sarette hit Tavante Thornton for a 60-yard TD.

There were some bright spots for the Indians, who will be at St. Thomas Aquinas Saturday at 2 p.m. The senior Sarette finished an efficient 4-of-7 passing for 161 yards, two touchdowns and had an interception on defense, and junior Jarrod St. Jean made an acrobatic interception in the first quarter.

Pelham will look to make it two in a row on Friday when it hosts Milford at 7 p.m.
