Pelham falls in season opener

PELHAM — Alvirne twice scored through the air early in the third quarter Friday night then held off a fast-closing Pelham squad for a season-opening 14-6 victory in Division II play.

Last year, the Pythons closed out the season by pitching four consecutive shutouts, and they were well on their to another after quashing an Alvirne drive on two plays inside the 5 to close out the first half. Big tackles by Ed Shlimon, Nick Carroll and Conor Maslanek kept the Broncos from the end zone.

But Alvirne, which made the drop from Division 1, scored on their first two possessions of the third quarter to grab a 14-0 lead. The first scoring pass capped a 55-yard drive on a 9-yard pass from Kyle Gora to Jack Regan.

A blocked punt sent up the Broncos at the Pelham 25 and two plays later Gora hooked up with Kyle Boucher from 28 yards out for all points Alvirne would need.

"I'm proud of the way we fought," Pelham coach Tom Babaian said. "Other than those two big passes, we didn't really give up much. I give our kids a lot of credit for staying in the game and they didn't have any quit.

"I think the resolve in these kids is impressive. I can't speak for every team in our division, but there are a lot of teams in our division that would have folded when it was 14-0, and these kids didn't. They deserve a lot of credit for the performance they had on defense there."

A quarterback change provided some fourth-quarter spark to the Pythons as Ian Hoey guided a 26-yard drive that was set up on a Matt Crowley blocked punt. A 5-yard scoring pass to Colby Travis with 7:15 left cut Pelham's deficit to eight.

Pelham's final opportunity ended with 47 seconds left when Hoey was intercepted at the Alvirne 15.

"I think performance wise we had a couple kids who had the games of their lives in Eddy Shlimon and Brett Lindsay," Babaian said. "They both had tremendous games.

"I also want to mention Ian Hoey and the job he did after coming in. We're going to have to see how things shake out, but Ian definitely didn't hurt his chances (in a quarterback battle with starter Jake Herrling)."

Lindsay, who ran for a team-high 59 yards on 10 carries, provided 73 of Pelham's 96 yards of total offense

"We have to (rely) on defense," Babaian said. I thought we did some very good things offensively at the end of the game, but we're going to have to work on that."
