Stevens' massive day on defense helps Windham romp Timberlane

WINDHAM - With a mane of flowing blonde hair that would make even Rapunzel jealous, Windham's Cody Stevens looks more like a lion than he does a jaguar.

But Saturday afternoon, the big 6-foot-2, 205-pound senior played as ferociously as any wild animal. 

Stevens caught a lunging 31-yard touchdown pass that drew all of the "Oohs and Ahhs" of the Windham faithful, but he made his presence felt more on defense where he unofficially had a remarkable eight sacks to help the Jaguars throttle visiting Timberlane, 47-12.

Whenever Stevens had the ball in his hands, it took at least two Owls to bring him down. And when he rushed Timberlane quarterback Dan Hayes, who will certainly be sore Sunday morning, anyone that got in his way was punished.

"It was just an amazing game," said Stevens, a UMass Lowell lacrosse recruit. "This was probably the best week of practice we've had, and we just came out here and gave it our all."

Stevens spearheaded a defense that held the Owls (1-6) to just 62 yards of total offense at halftime as the Jags opened up a 34-6 lead. Timberlane's lone touchdown in the first half came in the second quarter off a Hayes 1-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Lovett on fourth down - and that only came after a muffed Windham punt gave the Owls a first-and-goal from the 2-yard-line.

"If it wasn't Cody it was somebody else putting pressure on the quarterback," said Windham coach Bill Raycraft. "Their quarterback is their main guy and we knew that coming in. So the plan was to put a little more pressure on him and force him to make some decisions.

"Fortunately we were able to get to him."

Windham (4-3) jumped on top early and didn't look back. After Seth Maffeo ended Timberlane's opening drive with an interception, quarterback Cody Potter hit Ryan Marotta on an 80-yard bomb on its first offensive play.

A senior, Potter was 9 of 13 passing for 214 yards and four TDs - all coming in the first half. Besides Marotta, he hit Stevens, Noah Lynch and Tommy Emrick for touchdowns of 31, 26 and 7 yards respectively. Emrick also rushed for an 18-yard TD in the first half, and both Maffeo and Stephan Robert ran for scores in the third quarter.

You want to talk about efficiency? The Jaguars scored on their first seven drives, and they only had eight all day.

"Our goal is to make the playoffs right now," said Stevens. "So we're going to just keep working day by day."

Timberlane scored late in the fourth quarter when backup QB Jared Morrison found Robert Olson for a 7-yard TD. The Owls host defending Division 1 champion Winnacunnet Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Windham has a tough matchup on Friday at Pinkerton (6-1), but, after last week's huge win over Salem, the Jaguars look to be playing their best football at the right time.

"I think we started slower than we normally like," said Raycraft. "But we're kind of at that point where every week we're starting to put all three phases together.

"We got a big one next week. Pinkerton has been on everybody's mind, and it's a playoff game for us."
