To say that the Pingree School baseball team was pumped up yesterday would be a gross understatement.
Ted Fitts set off a wild celebration when the senior southpaw from Topsfield posted a no-hit, 10-0 victory over Beaver Country Day at Chestnut Hill.
It was a case of deja vu as Fitts | Pingree's fourth man in the rotation | recorded the second successive no-hitter for the Highlanders. They received a no-no in their last game from Lamaree Rey against Bancroft last Friday.
"To have two no-hitters in a season would be amazing. But two in less than a week is phenomenal," Pingree coach Chris Powers beamed. "I don't think you ever expect anything like this."
Fitts, relying on a cut fastball and 12-to-6 curveball, threw 96 pitches, struck out five and walked two. He's now 2-0 and had a no-hitter going into the fifth inning of his previous start against Chapel Hill of Waltham, settling for a two-hitter.
Colin Canny's bases-loaded triple made it 7-0 and cemented the win for Pingree (8-2 overall, 4-0 in the Eastern Independent League). Jesse Sullivan was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Pat George went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Jolmi Minaya was 3-for-4 with a pair of ribbies.
