Winthrop | 6 |
During last year's five-win season, the Gloucester softball team most likely would've never won a game like yesterday's contest with Winthrop. But what a difference a year can make.
The Fishermen hit the road to take on a Vikings team that went 14-6 last year. However, the visitors were able to outlast Winthrop in an 11-inning marathon, 9-6, improving to 3-0 on the season. Gloucester put the game away in the top of the 11th when Olivia Frontiero knocked in two runs with a double to make it 8-6. Ali Kippen, who had homered in the 10th, then singled in Frontiero for an insurance run.
Senior Jill Lukegord displayed some toughness on the hill, pitching all 11 innings and striking out nine to get the win.
"We are a very young team, but we are very talented," said Gloucester head coach Julianne Ferguson. "This was a big win."
