NEWTON — First singles player Samantha Camilo won the final match of the day to give Andover a 3-2 win over Westford yesterday in the Division 1 North final at Newton North High.
The senior beat talented frosh Clare Yu 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) to earn the Golden Warriors (21-0) a spot in the state semifinals. That's at an undertmined date and site against the winner of Friday's Needham-Barnstable South final match.
"Samantha was down 2-5 in the second set facing match point," explained second-year Golden Warrior coach Alan Hibino. "Then in the third set Sam was up 5-1. It's never easy."
Yu had beaten Camilo on April 17, when Andover beat the Ghosts by an identical 3-2 score.
Paige Webster and Pooja Mukund, who made the North finals in the State Open tourney, won 6-3, 6-0 at first singles. Freshman Courtney Nash rolled 6-1, 6-1 at third singles.
"Paige and Pooja have done a great job all year," said Hibino. "She stepped up to the plate and has done a great job all year."
Andover has a proud tennis tradition but this is still a lofty accomplishment. This year's squad is trying to equal the accomplishment of the 2007 team, which is believed to be the only Warrior tennis team (boys or girls) to win a state title.
