One might wonder what the Andover girls basketball team gained from last night's 61-32 first round Division 1 North rout of Medford.

After all, the Golden Warriors (19-3) zoomed to a commanding 26-5 lead in the first quarter, forcing 13 turnovers, and never had a problem with the Mustangs. After that, the starters only played in spurts and they were far from sharp in the second half as head coach Jim Tildsley substituted freely.

But Tildsley was happy with the game, which defined the term "tune-up."

"We hadn't played in two weeks so I was glad that we got some game action," said Tildsley. "And we experimented a little on defense. We were doing a lot of switching, which is something we haven't done, but we might need to later in the tournament. I thought we did that very well."

Oppressive defense was the main impetus in the decisive first quarter. Not only did the Warriors force all those turnovers, but they gave up just one field goal in three tries.

Offensively, Andover shredded Medford's loose 2-3 zone. Lauren Hughes was free all night on the free throw line and responded with 10 of her 13 points in the first quarter. Camille Fantini was immense underneath and scored 10 of her 12 points in the first quarter.

Freshman Natalie Gomez-Martinez led the Warriors with 17 points, which included one 3-pointer and a variety of driving layups off turnovers and fast breaks. Laura Renfro scored 10 points to give Andover four players in double figures.

With Andover ahead 41-13 at halftime, the last two quarters were anticlimactic. The only highlight came in the fourth quarter when senior Amanda Fantini, who has missed most of the season with an ACL injury, played for only the second time all year. She scored three points, with her field goal coming on an assist from her sister. She also assisted on a Camille basket.

The Warriors will face another Greater Boston League team (the winner of today's Waltham-Malden game) probably at home Friday.
