Cody Rothwell, who transferred in from St. John’s Prep before the season, delivered his first big day in Pentucket green yesterday.

The junior rushed for 105 yards and one score and returned a kickoff for another score as the Sachems downed Ipswich 28-12.

Rothwell, who saw time for the Eagles in their run to the Division 1 Super Bowl, started the game off in style. He fielded the opning kickoff and running it back 78 yards for a touchdown just 17 seconds into the game.

Pentucket, however, struggled to muster any more offense in the first half, held to only 24 yards on the ground.

But Rothwell and the Sachems struck back in the second half, capping a quick four-play drive when he broke through the line and rumbled 36-yards into the end zone. Fullback Nolan Dragon added the 2-point conversion to make it 15-12.

Another newcomer, freshman Jeff Porter then turned in a big play of his own, picking off Tigers QB Nick Andreas

“(Porter) just got thrown into the fire,” said Pentucket coach Steve Hayden. “Someone was out and he came up and did a nice job.”

Rothwell then chippin in a 37-yard run, setting up Dragon’s 9-yard score. The Sachems closed out the scoring when quarterback Ryan Kuchar connected with Jon Simard on a 24-yard touchdown in the fourth.
