Dragon leads Pentucket over Triton

BYFIELD – Possession might be meaningful where the law is concerned, but it means nothing on a football field.

Pentucket was on the short end of almost all the offensive numbers yesterday except where it counted most. The Sachems twice rebounded from deficits of eight points or more and knocked off Triton 30-28.

Pentucket rebounds for comeback win over Saugus

SAUGUS — For Pentucket, 15 short minutes made a world of difference.

In the first half of yesterday’s game, the smart, split-second decision-making of Saugus’ option quarterback C.J. Randolph rolled up 153 rushing yards, while the defense bottled up Pentucket’s attack to just 61 yards and forced a turnover. Going into the break, Saugus held a 14-7 advantage.

Pentucket's poor second half leads to loss

LYNNFIELD — Pentucket’s frequent inability to tackle Lynnfield quarterback Michael Karavetsos and running back Kyle McGah led to a long second half for the visiting Sachems yesterday afternoon.
Pentucket led by two touchdowns entering halftime. But both Karavetsos and McGah were almost unstoppable in the third and four quarters to help Lynnfield rally to a 21-14 home victory.
Karavetsos ran all over the place, exploding up the middle and into the flat while McGah mostly powered his way up the middle of the field.
The Lynnfield quarterback ran 23 times for 161 yards and a pair of touchdowns. McGah rushed 17 times for 88 yards
“They really didn’t do anything good,” Pentucket junior defensive back Cody Rothwell said. “We just didn’t tackle them. Just missed tackles. ... Nothing really else than that.”
Karavetsos’ touchdown runs were of 31 and 35 yards.
“We knew he (Karavetsos) was a good athlete,” Pentucket coach Steve Hayden said. “He did well and their back ran hard. The kids up front did well. Hats off to them.
“We didn’t finish our tackles on defense,” Hayden added. “We had (McGah) in the backfield a few times. He broke tackles. So hey, kudos to him.”
The biggest play of the game came in the fourth quarter with about 6 minutes remaining.
Lynnfield faked a punt on a fourth-and-6 play from its own 36-yard line.
The ball was directly snapped to Alex Roper who was standing in backfield with the punter. Roper fired a 13-yard pass to a wide-open Tyler Palumbo for a first down.
On the very next play, Karavetsos hurled a 51-yard touchdown pass to Steven Yobaccio for the go-ahead score with 5:40 left.
Pentucket got the ball back two more times with a chance to tie the game, but failed to do so, going three-and-out on one drive and being unable to convert on a fourth-and-10 play with 40 seconds remaining on its final drive.
Another crucial play came with 2:46 left in the third quarter.
Pentucket was leading 14-7 at the time and had a terrific opportunity to go ahead by two touchdowns. The Sachems had the football on Lynnfield’s 2-yard line but failed to convert a fourth-and-1 play.
Rothwell took the handoff but was stopped just short of the 1-yard line.
Lynnfield took possession and drove 98 1/2 yards on eight plays and in 2:24 to tie the game 14-14.
Pentucket quarterback Ryan Kuchar did make some nice throws to Jon Simard, including connecting with Simard for a 39-yard pass play.
“It’s pretty good,” Rothwell said about the connection between Kuchar and Simard. “We’ve been working on it (the pass game) all week. They’ve just been throwing before practice and everything.”
Pentucket senior co-captain Nolan Dragon left the game early in the second half with an arm injury and did not return.
“His arm is hurt so we’re going to have to wait and see,” Hayden said.
