HAMILTON — The game could not have started any better for Pentucket.

The Sachems marched up the field on the game’s opening drive for a score, but struggled from there and lost to Hamilton-Wenham 30-7 yesterday afternoon.

“We are capable of doing good things,” said Pentucket coach Steve Hayden. “We had the nice drive, but we couldn’t stay with that. We have a lot to work on.”

Pentucket opened the game with a picture-perfect 13-play drive that covered 67 yards and burnt the first 7:24 in trademark methodical Sachem fashion. Sophomore D.J. Engelke capped the drive with a 2-yard touchdown plunge.

“After the first drive, we had to wake up,” said Hamilton-Wenham coach Andrew Morency. “We know Pentucket runs the wing-T so well and (Nolan) Dragon is a big presence.”

The Generals were able to answer quickly with two touchdowns in 1:06, helped by a Pentucket fumble. The Sachems fumbled again late in the second quarter, and Hamilton-Wenham once again capitalized with a touchdown.

“We shot ourselves in the foot and they took advantage,” said Hayden. “We had two costly turnovers. They were more physical. We need to be consistent.”

Returning Eagle-Tribune All-Star Dragon was once again the star for Pentucket. The senior carried 18 times for a game-high 152 yards and made a team-high eight tackles.

Also standing out for the Sachems was defensive lineman Mike McCarron, who made a pair of sacks and three tackles, and Calvin Wiles and Tim Freiermuth also chipped in with five tackles each.

Wiles, also the starting quarterback, added the stick of the day, with a massive hit on a receiver which drew a questionable unnecessary roughness penalty.

The Sachems were without a key piece in starting running back/defensive back Sean Brennan, who missed the game with an undisclosed injury.

“(Hamilton-Wenham) didn’t make any major adjustments,” said Hayden. “It’s up to us to play better and work harder. There were some good things, but a lot to work on.”
