LAWRENCE — Denied his 100th win for three straight weeks, Chuck Adamopoulos “was starting to feel a little bit like (Red Sox righty) Tim Wakefield."

Well there were no knucklers thrown here last night at the Raiders’ Homecoming before about 3,000. Matt McDermott and the Raiders brought nothing but heat, stomping intra-city rival Lawrence High, 36-0.

“The one thing I’m most happy about is all the wins came at one school,” said the 15th-year head coach, who moves to 100-58 in his career. “Really, we needed this. We needed to get back to playing defense like we were early in the year, and we did that. Then our offense took off. Matt McDermott was awesome, and his receivers played like we were hoping they would all year.”

McDermott’s near-flawless effort resulted in 10 of 14 completions for 245 yards and a pair of TD passes. The senior also led 3-4 Central on the ground with 84 yards on 16 carries.

Clearly, though, it was the defense, and more specifically linebacker Devon Lattrell, which ignited Central to the delight of its huge crowd.

The tri-captain provided all the points his club would need early in the first quarter by blocking a punt back into Lawrence’s end zone for a safety.

“I was just very happy to be coming back. On that blocked punt, I never got touched,” said Lattrell. “After last week (a 42-15 loss to Lowell), it felt really good. We pretty much knew what coach was going after, so this was a big one, for all of us.

You could feel it with the team, even before the game in the locker room, you knew this team was ready.”

Santino Brancato and Paul Karamourtopoulos caught McDermott’s TD tosses.

Brancato also carried 10 times for 33 yards and another TD. For Lawrence, it was the fourth straight defeat after a 2-0 start.

“It’s a big disappointment. To be honest, this program took a huge step back tonight,” said Lancer coach Mike Yameen “They were just better. We were not good at any phase of the game."

Lawrence was outgained 457-169, averaging only 4.8 yards a snap, with the Raiders gouging out 9.0 yards a play.
