TEWKSBURY — For the first time in the still young hockey season, Andover had something to celebrate in it’s post-game locker room.

Winless in its first four outings during which they had scored only seven goals, the Golden Warriors finally put together a strong showing on both ends of the ice to defeat Chelmsford 3-1 in a Merrimack Valley Conference/Dual County match up at the Breakaway Ice Center.

“It’s a lot nicer,” winger Scott Campbell said of the locker-room atmosphere. “Coach (Mario Martiniello) is happy and there’s no yelling. We won’t have as tough a day (today). It’s much more confident and happy.”

Campbell went a long way to helping create the up-beat mood, scoring both of Andover’s first two goals, including the go-ahead score with 9:49 left in the third period.

“Everyone wants to win,” Campbell said. “We kind of felt if we didn’t win this game it would put us in a hole for the rest of the season. But we didn’t think we were going to lose coming in. This is just a great win because it puts us back in the hunt for the league.”

The sophomore also gave the Golden Warriors (1-3-1 overall, 1-2 conference) a 1-0 lead with 6:55 left in the first when he took a nice pass from Stephen Brighton, split defenders at the blue line and stormed down the slot beating goalie Brad Alber on the stick side.

Chelmsford (3-2, 2-2) tied the score with only 6.9 seconds left in the opening period when Tyler Evans used a wraparound to beat goalie Kyle Berthiaume, who made 15 saves on the night. But that was the only serious threat of the night for the Lions, who managed only two shots on three power-play opportunities.

“We worked hard and they deserved to have the lead after the first period, so they were a little disappointed,” Martiniello said of his squad during the first intermission. “But we came in and pointed out that it was only one goal and they had to just work harder, which they did.

After a scoreless second period, Campbell once again gave the Warriors the lead off a scrum in front of the Chelmsford net.

“(Jack) Wilkie worked hard in front of the net and got it off the goalie,” said Campbell, who entered the game with one previous goal on the year. “I just found the puck when it came down on my stick and I put it right back in. It was kind of a dirty goal.”

Defenseman David Belluche provided breathing room with a power-play goal on a one-timer from the point with 6:43 left.

The only thing left was Campbell’s attempt at a hat trick when he stole a pass at the Andover blue line and had nothing but open ice in front of him with 57 seconds remaining.

“I was hoping for it,” Campbell said. “I kind of choked on that breakaway. I thought I had (Alber) beat on the glove side and there was a guy chasing me. I had him beat, but I guess I just choked.”
