St. John's Prep lacrosse pounds Chelmsford in tourney opener

DANVERS -- Simply winning one tournament game is the goal of a team that's satisfied with qualifying for the postseason.

Teams intent on winning championships aim a little higher. Case in point: East Division 1 boys lacrosse No. 2 seed St. John's Prep's performance yesterday afternoon against No. 15 Chelmsford in a first round game at Cronin Field.

Lawrence's KB Oshodi has been one of Central Catholic's best and brightest track stars. And he has the Raider football program to thank for it.

"In my freshman year, the football coaches wanted to get us to do track," Oshodi explained. "They said it would be good to try and do a lot of different stuff. In the triple jump, in my first year, I was doing better than the varsity guys. I did well and I just continued to improve."

Martin (3 homers, 7 RBIs) caps historic day

Andover senior Tricia Martin had a day for the record books yesterday in an improbable 11-9 victory over Chelmsford.

Martin crushed three home runs, including a three-run blast to win the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, was 5 for 5 overall and knocked in seven runs.

New England Tournament

Timberlane's young wrestling team matured quickly during the season and | paced by heavyweight champion Brian Nicoll and 103-pound runner-up Cam Sullivan, both juniors | it grew up completely yesterday at the New England Tournament.

Division 1 North Sectionals

The seeds had Andrik Cruz primed for a third straight sectional final disappointment.

Cruz would have none of that. The Methuen High senior, wrestling at 145 pounds, made his third North championship try a winning one, heading up an area contingent of two champs and 15 places moving on to the Division 1 North championships in Bridgewater next weekend.

Fisichelli's three points sparks Central to runaway

Cam Fisichelli scored two goals and assisted on another to lead Central Catholic to a 6-2 victory over Chelmsford. Tim Houston had a goal and three assists while Brendan Slein and Nick Leonard each had a goal and an assist and Justen Kurek had the final goal for the Raiders.

Maturing Owls back on top at Lowell

Heavyweight Brian Nicoll put an exclamation point on an impressive statement made by the Timberlane wrestling team yesterday at the 54-team Lowell Holiday Tournament.

The Owls, who finished second last year by a point and a half, came back with a vengence to claim their third team crown in four years with 241 points, comfortably ahead of runners-up Concord, N.H., and Winchester, who tied with 210. Pinkerton (120) was sixth, Central Catholic (111) came in eighth and Salem, N.H. (102<1/2>) tied for 10th.

Chelmsford sloshes past Central

LAWRENCE | On a fourth-quarter, fourth-and-eight, Mike Leavitt took a Shain Jowett dumpoff, danced past one tackler, banged off two more, finally got corralled by three Chelmsford defenders and managed to drag the pile forward toward the first-down marker.

Andover still has no answers for Chelmsford

ANDOVER | The curse strikes again.

Andover continued its more-than two-decade-long struggles against Chelmsford, falling to the Lions 42-29 in a crucial Merrimack Valley Conference battle last night at Eugene V. Lovely Field.

Chelmsford runs over Methuen

CHELMSFORD | The only thing sloppier than the field at the end of the game was Methuen's offense during it.

The injury-riddled Rangers only picked up 53 yards of water-logged offense, 47 of that on one long run from Mike Bartlett, as the MVC-leading Chelmsford Lions rolled to a 28-0 win.
