Glynn gets his All-State title

METHUEN – Mike Glynn knew all about being a runner-up.

Saturday, he earned his All-State crown.

The Central Catholic senior, who finished twice each of the previous two seasons, had his way with the tough 138-pound field at Methuen, earning four decisions by a combined 44-12.

Two Hillies in semis

 

Haverhill's Ben Davoli (113) and Edgar Feliciano (132) will both be competing this morning at Methuen in the Division 1 state meet semifinals after having won their quarterfinal matches Friday. Teammate Jake Nicolosi lost his first nmatch of the year, 9-4 to Xaverian's Michael Bobola, but is still alive in the consolation as is Steven Wise and Jay Levy.

Iwanicki, Prep finish on top

 

METHUEN — St. John's Prep's Rawson Iwanicki of Andover is one very confident freshman, so much so that some might call him cocky.

But that would be a mistake because Iwanicki, as he showed Saturday at the Division 1 North sectional, has good reason to be confident. By defeating Lawrence's talented John Vasquez 8-3 in the finals, Iwanicki improved to his season record to a sterling 45-2.

LAWRENCE — Central Catholic and Methuen have enjoyed some close, intense battles on the mat over the last decade.

But Tuesday afternoon was not one of them as the host Raiders romped to a 57-14 victory, improvinf their record to 20-2 and clinching at least a share of the MVC Division 1 title.

Cordero sparks Rangers

 

Xavier Cordero battled back from an early deficit to grab a 7-3 decision at 132 pounds to help spark Methuen to a hard fought 39-36 win over Lawrence. Heavyweigh Corey Bard had a key pin for the Rangers (19-3) as well.

Rangers now 18-2

 

Methuen won five meets at home to improve to 18-2 and had plenty of highlights along the way. CJ Brown had a great win over Nick Mazzuchelli of St. John's turning a close match into a pin in the 3rd period to remain undefeated at 170 pounds (25-0, 21 pins) while heavyweight Corey Bard and Dom DeMaio (152) both pinned wrestlers they lost to earlier in the year on way to undefeated days.

Ramos making an impact

 

Methuen senior Jay Ramos is the kind of first-year varsity wrestler that any coach would love to have.

Ramos started the season promising, going 3-2 in his first five matches before getting injured. But he returned to action two weeks ago and has gone 8-0 since with eight pins.
