Salem holds off late Pinkerton run for win

DERRY — Fortunately for Salem, it played well enough through three quarters to survive its first outing of the new year.

The Blue Devils squandered all but two of an 18-point lead down the stretch, but stopped the bleeding just in time to take a 63-59 win over host and archrival Pinkerton on Tuesday night.

“The kids held on, and ultimately that’s the goal,” Salem coach Rob McLaughlin said. “If you can learn something, get a little bit better and get a (win) at the same time on the road, that’s kind of the best.”
Salem led by 18 point on a fast-break layup from Trevor DeMinico with 6:31 left in the fourth.
But that’s when Pinkerton became energized, forcing 11 turnovers with a stifling press, outscoring the Blue Devils 23-7. A pair of free throws by Sam Goy made the score 61-59 with 18 seconds left.
But Zack Caraballo righted Salem’s night with two free throws of his own a second later for the game’s final points.
Salem (4-3) took the lead on the game’s first field goal — a baseline 3-pointer by Nicholas Hayes 68 seconds into the contest. In fact, the Blue Devils scored the night’s first nine points before Pinkerton got on the board with 4:20 left in the first quarter.
Pinkerton (2-4) hurt its cause with turnovers on its first six possessions and seven of its first nine. The Blue Devils forced two of their three first-half offensive fouls to aid their case.
In the first half, Salem forced 19 turnovers while limiting the Astros to 8-of-28 shooting. Pinkerton also committed 19 fouls.
“That’s sort of been our calling card, and what we’ve been preaching year after year,” McLaughlin said of his team’s start. “I thought we came out with good energy and the kids had a good bounce to them, and we caused a lot of turnovers.
“I was psyched with how we took charges. And that’s something we’ve preached since day one. Those plays can be momentum changers.”
Zack Caraballo paced Salem the opening half, scoring 13 of his game-high 20 points as the Blue Devils used runs of 14-4 and 14-5 to open a 16-point lead with 2:49 before intermission.
“This has been a problem,” said Pinkerton coach Peter Rosinski, who used his entire 14-man roster in the game’s first 15 minutes. “We came out of the gate too slow, and then in the fourth quarter we finally woke up and played really hard ... We have to have guys develop into leadership roles.”
Cason Giordano and Sam Goy each came off the bench to pace Pinkerton with 16 and 13 points, respectively
“We shot the ball pretty well,” said McLaughlin. “Our defense was rolling and we were taking charges and doing the little things. But we obviously have to work on closing teams out. We have to do a little better job taking care of the ball when the pressure hits.”
