Treff homer powers Salem into semifinals

SALEM, NH — In a state quarterfinal game suspended a half hour by lightning, Salem’s Josh Treff abruptly ended it with a blast of his own.

The junior captain capped a four-run seventh with a two-run homer as the fourth-seeded Blue Devils upended Timberlane 7-5 yesterday. The victory sends Salem into a Tuesday showdown with top-seeded Nashua North at Holman Stadium.

Exeter in the Poore house

After yielding a first-inning run, Nick Poore bore down and allowed just one Exeter runner into scoring position the rest of the way, helping Salem advance in Class L tourney play, 2-1. Poore gave up just two hits and struck out 11 for the victory as DH Joseph Morin reached base twice (fielder's choice and walk) and was driven in each time by Sam Fazioli (single and double, two of the Blue Devils' three hits).

Joseph Morin doubled and tripled, scoring two runs and driving in another as Salem toppled Winnacunnet, 4-1. Darren Brown threw three innings of no-hit ball for the win, getting strong bullpen help from Rob Liberatore and Dan Peters.

Salem saw its two-game winning streak disappear as Merrimack dealt the Blue Devils a 7-6 upset loss. Run-scoring hits from Jordan Estevez (three hits, three RBIs) and Darren Brown highlighted a four-run third inning that put Salem temporarily on top.

Nashua South 5, Salem 4

Three errors cost Salem dearly, allowing Nashua South to score five unearned runs in a 5-4 victory. Nick Poore excelled once again, following a no-hit performance with a four-hit, 12-strikeout effort. Joe Morin stroked a pair of doubles and plated a run while Darren Brown contributed a two-run single for the Blue Devils. The top four hitters in the Salem lineup had all 10 hits on the day.
