Saugus football stomps Marblehead

MARBLEHEAD | Head coach Doug Chernovetz knows his Marblehead High football team is better than it has played this season.

Unfortunately, the Magicians only have one more game to prove it.

Marblehead dropped its third straight game | and missed out on an opportunity to keep alive hope for its first winning season since 1992 | when Saugus scored early and often on its way to a 40-14 victory last night at Piper Field.

There isn't a football coach in the Northeastern Conference that Marblehead's Doug Chernovetz respects more than Beverly's Dan Bauer.

Bauer introduced Chernovetz to NEC football when he hired him as an offensive coordinator/defensive backs coach for the Panthers in 2003. Bauer was later sad to see him leave the program two years later.

Marblehead dedicates win to principal's daughter

The Marblehead football team had plenty of incentive in a 15-7 hard-fought, sloppy victory over Danvers that included eight turnovers Saturday at Dr. Deering Field. The award-winning Danvers High band was, as usual, flawless.

Quarterback by committee

Is it quarterback controversy, quarterback competition or quarterback by committee?

Let's scratch quarterback controversy from that list right off the bat because that casts such a negative light over a program. However, it seems we do have both a quarterback competition and a committee situation right here on the North Shore in Marblehead and Beverly, respectively. While neither Marblehead coach Doug Chernovetz nor Beverly coach Dan Bauer planned on using two quarterbacks during the preseason, both are making the best of it.

Marblehead football drubbed by Lynn English

LYNN | Marblehead High football coach Doug Chernovetz doesn't believe in hexes or curses. He just wanted his team to play sound football against favored Lynn English, which has beaten the Magicians every year since 1992.

Marblehead's upside becoming apparent

From left, Marblehead sophomore Evan Comeau, senior Eric Fader, and senior Michael Sahagian have helped the football team to wins in three of the team's first five games this season. Last year, the Magicians managed only four wins.1 Photo

Doug Chernovetz won't fall into the trap of saying that his Marblehead High football team has made a turnaround, mainly because it implies that the Magicians are already assured of a winning season.

What you might get Chernovetz to say is that Marblehead is getting there.

Classical gets offensive, runs all over Marblehead

MARBLEHEAD | After coming into last night's game with visiting Lynn Classical "cocky (and) a bit arrogant" according to their head coach, the Marblehead High football team got the exact opposite of what they were expecting last night.

Football is in Doug Chernovetz's blood.

Growing up in Connecticut, Chernovetz learned the sport from a man who quarterbacked the Syracuse Orangemen in the mid-1960s. Doug's father, John Chernovetz, showed him all the intricacies of the sport, and his second cousin, Bob Kuziel, was also a center in the National Football League in the late-1970s.

Fishermen can't take underdog Magicians for granted

Tonight's Northeastern Conference matchup between Gloucester and Marblehead may not count toward a berth in the playoffs. But it still means a lot in the minds of the Fishermen and the Magicians.

That hunger should lead to an intense football game at Newell Stadium (7:45 p.m.), as both teams come in at 1-0, and both teams looked very impressive last week.

Marblehead football stops Ipswich in season opener

IPSWICH | There's no bigger game than the next one.

The excitement in the Marblehead High football team's postgame huddle was a great example of that cliche often used by coaches as a motivational tool. And the silent eyes focused on one barking voice in the Ipswich circle was an even better one.
