Wilmington 61, Newburyport 57

In a game that came down to a few plays at the end, Wilmington was able to pull of a tight win, 61-57. Coach Neil Reardon said he was very pleased with the effort. Sam Baribeault led the Clippers with a season-high 18 point (3 3-pointers), Beth Castantini had 13 points, Lindsey Tomasz had a nice overall game with 12 points, and Sam Leahy had eight points.

Taryn O'Connell tallied 23 points and 18 rebounds for the Royals (3-9). Haley Gisonno added 11 points and nine rebounds. Rachel Sherman added nine points.

Indians can't overcome Wildcats

The Amesbury Indians (4-8) struggled from the tip against the Wilmington Wildcats, falling 54-38. Gabby Magnifico led the Indians with 10 points, while Colleen Brockmyre added nine, and Deryn Zahoruiko tallied eight points and nine boards. The score was 33-13 at the half. Wilmington's Amy Fahey led the Wildcats with 17 points.

Wilmington 53, Triton 38

Jen Rock had a terrific performance scoring 16 points as Triton led through the first half, 25-21. Howeve, turnovers (19 overall) killed the Vikings in the second half and the team lost its momentum as Wilmington took over. Lauren Mihalchik contributed nine points and Maxine Crossman had 10 rebounds before going with an injury and missing the fourth quarter.

Agboola, Ortiz lead Rangers

The Methuen girls basketball team topped Wilmington yesterday, 61-56, to improve to 1-1 thanks to stellar individual efforts from Rashidat Agboola and Katelyn Ortiz. Ortiz led all scorers with 24 points including one 3-pointer, and Agboola had a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Courtney Murach chipped in with nine rebounds to go along with four points. Making the victory even more impressive is the fact that the Rangers were outscored 21-10 in the final frame.

Scarlet Knights take opener

The North Andover girls basketball team bested Wilmington, 48-40, to open the season on a high note. The Scarlet Knights were led by returning Eagle Tribune All-Star Nicole Zahoruiko, who had 11 points and nine rebounds. Nikki Karalis recorded a team-high 14 points, and Katie Moroni finished with 12 boards.
