Iwanicki, Prep finish on top

 

METHUEN — St. John's Prep's Rawson Iwanicki of Andover is one very confident freshman, so much so that some might call him cocky.

But that would be a mistake because Iwanicki, as he showed Saturday at the Division 1 North sectional, has good reason to be confident. By defeating Lawrence's talented John Vasquez 8-3 in the finals, Iwanicki improved to his season record to a sterling 45-2.

Reversal for Warriors

Andover got quick revenge for its loss Saturday in the finals of the Hillie duals, tripping Lawrence 40-30. That gave the Warriors (21-3) a school record 21 wins and clinched a tie for the MVC Division 2 title. Key wins for the Warriors were by Theo Krueger at 126, Connor Sheehan at 182 and heavyweight AJ Heidtke who avenged a personal loss with a 10-0 major decision.

Lancers win Hillie duals

 

HAVERHILL — For better and worse, junior Alex Chhy is what Lawrence wrestling is all about.

A first-year wrestler, like so many of the Lancers, Chhy has gradually progressed since the season started. And Saturday he took it another step forward with two key wins, the final being a pin in the last match of the day to clinch a 42-33 win over Andover in the finals of the Hillie Duals.

Trailing 6-2 to ighly ranked Liam McAveny, Andover sophomore Jonathan Davila charged back for a 7-6 decision to highlight Andover's 36-18 victory over Masconomet.

Andover improved to 16-3 with a quad-meet sweep at Malden Catholic. The Warriors were unbeaten on the day from 138 through 182 pounds with Kelvin Davila (152) and Elias Maita (160) both 3-0.

Central gets the matchups

 

ANDOVER — Jackie Dehney had already proven herself in tournaments, starting with her season-opening title at the Blue Devil Classic.

On Wednesday night, the Central Catholic freshman girl showed her value in dual-meet showdowns with an impressive major decision that helped the Raiders surge past Andover, 40-33, in a Merrimack Valley Conference showdown.

Andover's "Major' day

 

Due to an unjury, Sean Ballou and Brendan Major were botyh forced to bump up in weight classes and both delivered as Andover captured the Duxbury Duals, defeating improved Lowell 42-36 in the finals, to improve to 13-1. Ballous bumped up from 170 to 195 and Major from 195 to 220 and both had three pins.

Andover settles for 3rd

 

Andover took third at the Woburn Invitational, which was won by St. John's Prep, but the Warriors had an impressive champion in 145-pound sophomore Jonathan Davila. Trailing 6-4 in the last minute in the finals, he rallied for a 9-7 decision.

Wise prevails

 

Haverhill's Steven Wise had an impressive 8-7 decision over Andover's  Kelvin Davila at 152 but there were few other highlights for the Hillies, who fell to surging Andover, 42-20. Elias Maita had a 52-second at 160 to remain unbeaten for the Warriors (9-1).

Warriors tune up

 

Unbeaten Andover tuned up for a big test against Methuen Saturday with a 64-12 romp over Billerica. Kelvin Davila's 36-second pin at 152 started a string of seven straight falls for the Warriors (6-0).
