Andover's Thompson leads Phillips to dramatic win

ANDOVER — Michael Thompson took a snap and plowed in for a 3-yard touchdown with 19 seconds left in the game, giving Phillips Academy a 21-17 comeback victory over Deerfield Academy on Sunday.

Thompson, an Andover resident, and the Big Blue got the ball with less that two minutes left and trailing by 17-14. Thomson hit Sal Lupoli for a huge 37-yard gain on a screen play, then took a QB keep 17 yards to set up his game-winning touchdown.

"We ran a great two-minute drill," said Phillips coach Leon Modeste. "A few guys made big plays when we needed them."

It was a big day for Thompson. He threw for 202 yards and a touchdown to Jake Bedell.
Lupoli scored the other Big Blue touchdown, and made 12 tackles. Magnus Voge chipped in with 14 tackles.
Phillis next travels to Worcester Academy on Saturday (5 p.m.), before hosting legendary archrival Phillips Exeter on Nov. 19 (3:30 p.m.)
"Sal and Jake made big plays as always on defense," said Modeste. "And Thompson really stepped up. It's great to get our first home win of the season. Now we hope we can win our final two games of the season."
