DANVERS — The late season momentum continued for Central Catholic Saturday as the Raiders captured the Division 2 North title in convincing fashion.

Led by champions Mike Glynn (106) and Joey Sanchez (145), the Raiders piled up 213 1/2 points to easily outdistance runner-up Burlington (156.5). North Andover was three points back in third place.

Whittier splits

 

Whittier Tech split at its own Travis Yell Dual Tournament, which was won by Winchester. Edgar Feliciano came back from about with the flu to win both his matches at 138 for the Wildcats, who finished their dual season with a 12-5 record.

Powerful Pastrana

 

Greater Lawrence senior Malib Pastrana certainly made his mark on the State Vocational Meet. He had the fastest pin of the day, in nine seconds, had four first period pins on his way to winning the 195-pound title and he was named the tourney Outstanding Wrestler for the upper weights.

Takesian milestone

Whittier wrestling coach Harry Takesian earned his 100th career win, a 42-41 thriller over Greater Lowell. The Cats needed pins by Shaun Mears and Andrew Buzzell and they delivered. Mears was returning from injury and was bumped up to 182.

Edgar Feliciano (138) and Eagle-Tribune unsung hero Peter Hamel (145) were both 3-0 on the day as WHittier took two of three in a quad-meet at Westford. Andrew Buzzell and heavyweight Jon Ahern were also perfect on the day as the Wildcats improved to 10-2.

Whittier 2nd at Pelham

 

Whittier Tech flexed its muscles in the upper weights at the Dan Gionet tournament in Pelham to finish second behind Marblehead/Swampscott.

Jon Ahern placed first at heavyweight, with pins in 13 and 56 seconds and teammates Chris McNulty and Erickson Rivas finished third and fourth respectively. Ahern was joined in the winner's circle by 195-pounder Andrew Buzzell.

Pastrana wins title

 

Greater Lawrence senior Malib Pastrana not only won his weight class at the Chelmsford tournament, he dominated.

Pastrana started with three first-period pins at 195 pounds and then setled for a 12-2 major decision in the finals. With Abel Orta finishing second at 152 for the Reggies, Gr. Lawrence finished in 12th place, two places behind Whittier.

'Cats pin and pin

 

Whittier Tech's wrestling team won 10 matches, all by pin, to defeated Essex Tech 60-15 to improve to 7-1. Peter Hamel had the fastest pin for the Wildcats, in 47 seconds.

Avenges loss

 

Andrew Buzzell avenged his only loss on the season to Marblehead's Armani Dotson, controlling the entire match before getting a pin in the second period as Whittier beat Marblehead/Swampscott and Pentucket but fell to Georgetown. For Pentucket, which beat Georgetown and Marblehead, Tyler Knox remained undefeated at 106 and Jason Young, Jake Slevosky and Pete D'Agostino were all 3-0. Georgetown-Ipswich went 2-1, and Matt Mansfield went 3-0 at 152 pounds.

Sachems win own tournament

 

WEST NEWBURY —  Something different happened at the Pentucket Wrestling Tournament Wednesday and it took head Pentucket coach Dennis Puleo by surprise.

For the first time in 17 years, the Sachems — without any seniors — won their own tournament, and in impressive fashion at that, finishing with 144 1/2 points, comfortably ahead of runner-up Whittier (123). The Timberlane B team was in third with 111 1/2.
