There were a slew of spectacular performances by local athletes at Saturday’s 70th annual New England Championships in Saco, Maine. Methuen junior Wileshka Samuel broke her own area records with a 12.19 in the 100 meters and a 24.94 in the 200. She placed third in the 200 and finished just out of the money (top 6 score) with a seventh in a loaded 100 field. “It all came together nicely,” said Rangers coach Nick Collopy. “It’s fun to coach her and fun to watch. Her times have improved every week the last four weeks.” The Rangers also came up big in the boys relays with a fifth in the 4x800 and a sixth in the 4x400. John St. Hilaire and sophomore Fernando Damota ran on both. Caveney vs. Coach Andover coach Peter Comeau saw his 31-year-old 300 intermediate hurdles record fall to Golden Warrior senior Sean Caveney. Andover usually runs the 400 hurdles but Caveney made the transition with a 38.64 to place second. That’s considered faster than former New England champ Comeau’s hand-timed 38.6 and the automatic time by AHS’s Steve Shepard with a 39.05 in 1992. ”People think I’m crazy for saying this, but I’d rather be the coach of the guy who breaks it. That was awesome. It was very exciting,” said Comeau. Andover’s 4x400 team brought home the gold with anchor Hamza Naveed running a 48.8 split to make up a 10-yard deficit. They ran a speedy 3:19.61 to move up to second all-time in our area. Naveed teamed with Caveney, Raymond Gorzela and Jeremy Travaglini. Ace high hurdler Sebastian Silveira was just off his school record with a 14.24 for fourth. Duffy, 4x800 records North Andover’s super sophomore Erick Duffy soared 15-3, continuing his remarkable recent stretch of personal bests, to take third in the pole vault. The 4x800 team of Zach Frahlich, Chris Dalke, Chris Lord and Marty Conrad nipped their own school record for a fourth place. Howes another record Londonderry’s Natalie Howes added over two feet to her own area javelin record with a 139-1 to win the event. She also placed fifth in the pole vault while Skyler Goss of Pelham was runner-up (11-9). Faucher, Pettis shine Haverhill junior Jack Pettis took fifth in the javelin with a personal best 171-9 while another talented junior, Timberlane’s Kyle Faucher. uncorked a big 184-11 heave, smashing his own school record by more than seven feet. He brought home the silver.

In the North Sectional heptathlon, which was held Monday and Tuesday at North Reading High, Pentucket senior McKenna Kilian dominated the 68-competitor field. The versatile and talented Kilian had a 101-point lead after Day 1 (2,366 to 2,265) and built on it in a big way with the three events Tuesday. She racked up 4,066 points to easily beat runner-up Katie Maehl of Waltham (3,624). Kilian, who will compete at Central Connecticut, is now ranked fifth all-time in the area. Julia Valenti of North Reading was fifth with 3,435 points.

Unbeaten MVC Division 1 champ Andover whipped Chelmsford 104-40 to wrap up regular season. Brianna Deloury won the high jump and 100 hurdles and Silvana Sanchez was victorious in the discus.

The girls matchup also was a battle of unbeatens but as expected Andover was too strong in a 98-47 win over North Andover. Hannah Chapman (long jump/triple jump) and Brianna Deloury (5-5 high jump, 100 hurdles) were the stars of the day.

Samuel keeps winning In the girls 200, Methuen’s Wileshka Samuel continued her dominant ways, running to victory in 25.52. “I was actually kind of nervous when I got here and looked at the competition,” said the reigning Eagle-Tribune girls MVP. “But once I got out there and settled down and just focused on winning.” Unlike last season, when she won at Andover Boosters in a dramatic photo finish, this season, her win was fairly comfortable, ahead of No. 2 Rhyana Freeman of Brookline (26.10). “I am extremely happy with my performance,” she said. “I really wanted to repeat.” Johnson finds form Erika Johnson spent the majority of the spring looking to rediscover her groove after a mishap on ice during the winter led to an injury. But the Central Catholic senior was in Eagle-Tribune All-Star form yesterday, winning the discus with a 113-7. “I’m very excited,” she said. “I have been trying to get back into form all spring. Last year I won so I really wanted to do it again. All week I was working on my form and making sure my left arm was in the right spot. I know I have more than 113-7 in me, but  I can live with that today.” Rangers finish upset Methuen’s Eric Rosario knew he faced a massive task when he took the baton for the 400-meter anchor leg of the distance medley relay. “I had to close the gap and (Andover star) Hamza (Naveed) is an amazing runner,” he said. “I didn’t know if I could keep up with him. But I just worked to close in and it paid off. Rosario teamed with Kevin Denose, Peter Kwakye and Kendrick Nenose to take the spring medley in 1:37.33. “We wanted to come here and earn a time to qualify for nationals,” he said. “Kendrick gave me the baton in great position and I did my job. All I was thinking was ‘Nationals, nationals!’ I want to go so bad.” Chen looks healthy Kevin Chen showed no signs of the torn ACL that ended his football season, running a blazing final leg for Andover’s winning 4x100 relay. “I had a huge lead going to my leg which was awesome,” said Chen. “All those guys ran great and I just had to run as fast as I could and finish it off.” Chen teamed with Sean Roselle, Ray Gorzela and Kaleb Jones for the win. “I was a little tired after the 200,” said Gorzela. “But we all just did everything we could to take it home.”

Hannah Chapman was a triple winner for Andover (long jump, triple jump, 100 hurdles) and Erika Johnson doubled for Central Catholic (shot put, discus) in the Golden Warriors' 92-53 win.

Hannah Chapman had a stellar meet with impressive wins in the long jump (16-8), triple jump (36-4) and 100 hurdles (15.95) and Andover blitzed Lowell 93-47. Hannah Ameen had an upset wiin in the 100 with a 12.70 clocking.
