Angry Reggies lambaste Whittier

HAVERHILL — While they feel victimized, do not brand the Greater Lawrence Tech boys hoop team as a victim.

No pouting, no wallowing, no pity here. Just anger-driven talent as Whittier Tech experience yesterday in an 83-47 Reggies win.

"They kicked us out of the Christmas Tournament, and I really do believe that has motivated this team," said co-captain Oscar Reynoso, who led all scorers yesterday with 17 points in just under three quarters of work.

"As a team, we've taken it personally. We're looking to show people that we're not as bad as they might think."

Forced to withdraw from the new Commonwealth Classic, the Reggies went out and made their first statement of the season, winning the Kipnes Classic at North Reading.

Yesterday's destruction of the reigning league champion Whittier — a program ravaged by gradustion — served as a second message.

"The tournament we played in just wasn't the same. It didn't have the same atmosphere as the Christmas tourney," said Reynoso. "But now, it's all about winning our league and making the state tournament. I think that might show they made a mistake."

In moving to 5-1 on the year, the Reggies blasted to a 26-11 first-quarter lead and never got tested again.

Greater Lawrence shared the wealth nicely, especially on the many fast breaks, as both Estrellas, Frankely and Alexis, had a dozen points apiece, Anthony Fabian chipped in 11 and Maikel Guerrero pounded the glass for 10 more points.

"You know with Whittier, we expected a much tougher test," said Reynoso. "But when we play well and we play together, good things are going to happen."

Andres Hernandez and Jeremiah Downer had 12 points apiece for the Wildcats, who fall to 2-3 on the year.
