Springfield Central controlled the meet but Lawrence's Anfernee Green and Methuen's Christian Monserrat were both impressive champions at the Division 1 state meet last night at Lawrence High.

CHELMSFORD — On a day when St. John's Prep rolled to the Division 1 North sectional title, Christian Monserrat stole the spotlight.

 Monserrat not only won his fourth straight sectional title, but he captured his 200th victory and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. he is now four wins shy of the Methuen scghool record of 204 wins set by John Sughrue.

North Andover got pins in the last two matches, by Bryan Sabet and Fritz Hoehn, to overtake Lawrence 37-28 and win the MVC title.

North Andover got a fifth from Jake Caporale at heavyweight to slip past lawrence for third place at the Methuen Invitational yesterday.

With Lawrence trailing by two points heading into the final match, lancers' heavyweight Alex Lopez recorded a pin in the third period to provide a 39-35 victory over a tough Chelmsford club. That kept Lawrence (14-7 overall) unbeaten in the Merrimack Valley Conference. Andy Delacruz had a pivotal 11-8 decision at 195.

Lawrence had a rough day in Springfield, losing three of four in a quad-meet, including 60-9 to Vermont power Mount Anthony.  Manny Arias was a bright spot for the Lancers, going 4-0 on the day.

Manny Arias got a pin in the final match to lift Lawrence past Methuen, 36-35, in a battle of MVC unbeatens.

Sometimes, even in wrestling, the best offense is a good defense.

Lawrence showed that quality yesterday with a 39-18 victory over Haverhill that completed a sweep, having also beaten Billerica (51-24) and Central Catholic (46-21), to improve to 10-4 and set up a big duel meet with Methuen on Wednesday.

Trailing 4-0, Lawrence senior Joel Gomez turned a quick move into a pin at 160 pounds to pace the Lancers to a 39-30 victory over Framingham.

Lawrence kept it close but couldn'y overtake Division 2 power Winchester, falling 41-30 as part of a tri-meet with Chicopee. Anfernee Green (132) and Rafael Medina (152) grabbed solid 9-8 and 2-0 decision for the Lancers, who are now 6-4.
