"It was a great effort by the kids," said coach John McVeigh. "We played a really good first half, but in the second half we just didn't make enough shots. We defended the way we needed to defend, but it was just not enough offense down the stretch."

The Brooks boys basketball team recorded a sweet payback victory over Beaver Country Day, 54-36, in the first round of the Class B prep tournament yesterday. Beaver Country Day is the defending B champ and knocked Brooks out of the tournament last year.

Patrick Benzan hit two free throws with 1.3 seconds left as Roxbury Latin beat Brooks 49-48.

Jayde Dawson scored 17 points and David Berroa added 11 as resilient Brooks held on to beat Thayer 53-50 for its fourth win in six days.

The Brooks boys basketball team was off the mark, hitting 2 of 21 3-pointers, but it held on to defeat a good Belmont Hill team, 55-50. Jayde Dawson led Brooks (14-4) with 19 points.

Sophomors Lavar Harewood and Aser Ghebremichael had season highs of 19 and 12 points as Brooks stifled Rivers 58-36.

Defending New England Prep Class B champion Beaver Country Day ousted Brooks in the semifinals last year but the Green and White got some revenge with a 70-62 win, handing BCD it's first loss. Jayde Dawson (29 points, 11 rebounds) and freshman Ikenna Ndugba (24 points, 7 assists) led the way.

David Berroa went out with a leg injury after scoring 12 points in the first half and was unable to return and Brooks lost its first game of the season, 62-59 in overtime to Nobles. Jayde Dawson scored 22 points in a losing cause for Brooks (7-1).

Freshman point guard Ikenna Ndugba stole the show with 18 points as unbeaten Brooks cruised past Thayer, 62-52, and captured the Huckins-Rouse Tourney championshiop. David Berroa and Jayde Dawson added 15 points apiece.

After the grusome leg injury many thought could be career-ending a season ago , returning to the court was already special for Lawrence's David Berroa of Brooks. But he turned it from inspiring to amazing.
