Timberlane quits in 2nd period, forfeits

The Timberlane hockey team has become the subject of controversy after the players and coaches walked off the ice with 2:30 to go in the second period of Wednesday’s matchup with Merrimack High School and did not return.
The Owls, who were trailing 8-1 at the time, forfeited the game.
Merrimack coach Kurt Mithoefer confirmed to The Eagle-Tribune last night that the incident occurred.
“I was completely blown away when I saw that,” Mithoefer told the New Hampshire Union Leader on Wednesday. “Not during my playing days and the couple of years I’ve been coaching (have I seen that). I don’t know exactly what (the Timberlane coach) was complaining about.”
Mithoefer declined to go into details last night, but said he had spoken to the NHIAA.
When contacted, Timberlane athletic director Angelo Fantasia declined to comment, other than to say that the school was reviewing the matter. First-year Owls coach Andy Hebert did not return numerous phone calls.
Mithoefer said last night the Owls coaches had given indications they were going to leave the ice before the incident occurred. He told the Union Leader that the Timberlane coaches were yelling from their bench they would not be returning to the ice after the intermission.
According to reports, there was a scrum in front of the net before Timberlane — which had seven penalties to Merrimack’s two at that point — left the ice.
A Timberlane player declined to comment, but Twitter was buzzing with comments on the incident.
“Timberlane lost 4-1 against Merrimack.... Oh wait we didn’t finish #thankscoach,” said the person under the twitter handle @CrowleyBrendan. That matches the name of Timberlane’s Brendan Crowley.
Another tweet read “Timberlane hockey rules!!! #benchclearingbrawls,” from the handle @joesal595, which appears to be the Twitter address of Timberlane senior Joe Salvagno.
“No, we forfeited after 2 periods cus (sic) we were brawling. Lost 8-1,” said the Twitter handle @LamboSlice5, which is credited to Timberlane senior Nick Lambert.
All of those Twitter handles follow the address “@_OwlsHockey.”
Mithoefer said that the interaction was not a brawl.
Timberlane hockey is nearing the end of a difficult 1-13 year in New Hampshire Divison 2. That marks the worst record for the Owls since the varsity program began in 2000-01. The next worst was 5-15 in 2004-05. The program is just four years removed from winning the Division 2 state title in 2009.
Hebert replaced Owls coach Ryan Dugan, who stepped down with three games to go last season, his second with the school.
