Lawrence Lancers Boys Soccer '12

Amazing turnaround

Just 0-14-4 only two years ago, Methuen High boys soccer completed the reclamation project last night. The Rangers blanked Lawrence 2-0 on a pair of Salah Baladi goals, qualifying for the state tournament for the first time since 2006. 
"We were winless in my first season, so this is a good turnaround for us," said coach Jeff Lamy, who got eight big saves from Shane Godek to protect the win for the 9-6-1 Rangers.

A hat trick, hat trick

Salah Baladi scored three goals, his third hat trick in as many games, and Kevin Echeverry scored two goals and assist on four others as Methuen topped Lawrence 8-0.

Holding on

 

Steven Quimby scored the game's lone goal and the Whittier boys soccer team then held on for dear life, defeating Lawrence 1-0. Jon Hewey made 13 saves for the Wildcats, some of the spectacular nature, and both Jay Green and Pat Ruane stood out on defense.

Collins leads upset

Meg Collins scored 12 points to lead North Andover to a 30-21 upset of two-time defending state champion Andover in the J.J. Donovan Fall Ball League. Talia Dellato had seven points in defeat.

Bad break

Two minutes into the second half of its soccer match against Andover, Lawrence's Romeo Gomez suffered a broken leg. Both teams rallied to complete the game in honor of their fallen comrade as Andover rode goals from Mike Maldari and Declan Collins to a 3-0 victory over the Lancers. "The camraderie was there for both teams," said Warriors head coach Jim Saalfrank.
