Can't hold lead

 

Salem's volleyball team won the first two games, but lost the next three games and fell in the Division 1 quarterfinals to Bishop Guertin. Jackie Cone led the Devils with 19 kills in her last high school match while Rachel Morrissey had 19 service points with four aces and came through with 22 digs.

Blue Devil milestones

It may have only been a first round playoff game, but Salem made its mark in a tough 3-1 volleyball victory over Timberlane.

Jackie Cone registered her 500th career kill, only the second player in the seven years that Dan Young has helmed the program to hit that plateau. Steph Long garnered her 500th dig, while sophomore Amanda Bickford was a serving machine with 15 aces while adding seven kills.

Down 9-1, Elisha Farris served seven straight points and Salem went on to win that second game 28-26 and sweep Nashua South 3-0. Jackie Cone had a superb all-around game.

Kelsey Card had 34 assists and Jackie Cone added 21 digs as Salem put an end to Merrimack's perfect start (10-0) with a 3-1 win (25-13, 25-13, 14-25, 25-16). Cone had 16 service points and Rachel Morrisey added 18 digs for the Blue Devils (8-3).

Pinkerton's girls volleyball team spotted Salem the first game and then roared back with thre straight games for the win. The Astros enjoyed one of their best all-around efforts of the season. Jordan Young led in service points (18) and blocks for the Astros.

Farris the leader

Salem trailed by five in the fourth game before Elisha Farris went on a tear, serving the last seven points in a 26-24 game win for Salem, propelling the Blue Devils to a 3-1 win over Spaulding, which called two timeouts during her serves in an attempt to (unsuccessfullly) kill her momentum.

Big night for Cone

Jackie Cone picked right up from last season's volleyball successes, leading Salem to a quality season-opening road victory over a tough Hollis-Brookline team. Cone, who led the Blue Devils in kills last season, racked up 21 last night to go with 11 digs and two blocks. "She was offensively stellar," said head coach Dan Young. "Going to Hollis and getting the win was huge. They're a solid, solid team."
