Phillips wins 12th title

Down 3-0 after five innings, the Phillips Academy baseball team did what it traditionally does best. The Big Blue found ways to rally and win. Phillips stunned Deerfield Academy with two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh, walking off with the 4-3 decision and the program's 12th Central New England Prep School Baseball League title since 1995.
Tournament MVP Isaac Lamson drove in the game-winner in the seventh inning with a single. The sophomore third baseman was 3 for 3 with three RBIs in the title win for Phillips.
Jake Needham struck out five in three innings to earn the championship win in relief of Cole Mascott.
In the semifinals on Sunday, it was Phillips 20-1 over Dexter Southfield. Rowley's Thomas White dominated in the win with strong innings, striking out a dozen and allowing four hits and a pair of walks.

Sapienza stars in Phillips sweep

North Andover's Matt Sapienza send the game into extra innings with an RBI double in the fifth, drove in the winning runs with a two-run triple in the 12th, and earned the win with three innings of relief as Phillips Academy beat Deerfield Academy 3-2 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.

Daillion Johnson of Haverhill sank nine 3-pointers and poured in 31 points as Phillips Academy qualified for the NEPSAC tournament with a 74-51 victory over Deerfield.

Astros finish 5th

Pinkerton's bowling team struggled to fifth at a meet with Bishop Guertin, Dover, Souhegan and Stevens. The Astros were the 5th seed after a two-game standard ten pin total of 1479, their lowest of the season. Jason Barton rolled games of 160 and 135, Meghan Slater 138 and 128, Matt Gagnon with a season-high of 184 and 146, Bryant Nourse 157 and 149 and Lance Lemieux 137 and 145.

Andover's Thompson leads Phillips to dramatic win

ANDOVER — Michael Thompson took a snap and plowed in for a 3-yard touchdown with 19 seconds left in the game, giving Phillips Academy a 21-17 comeback victory over Deerfield Academy on Sunday.
 
Thompson, an Andover resident, and the Big Blue got the ball with less that two minutes left and trailing by 17-14. Thomson hit Sal Lupoli for a huge 37-yard gain on a screen play, then took a QB keep 17 yards to set up his game-winning touchdown.
 
"We ran a great two-minute drill," said Phillips coach Leon Modeste. "A few guys made big plays when we needed them."

 It was a big day for Thompson. He threw for 202 yards and a touchdown to Jake Bedell. 
Lupoli scored the other Big Blue touchdown, and made 12 tackles. Magnus Voge chipped in with 14 tackles. 
Phillis next travels to Worcester Academy on Saturday (5 p.m.), before hosting legendary archrival Phillips Exeter on Nov. 19 (3:30 p.m.)
"Sal and Jake made big plays as always on defense," said Modeste. "And Thompson really stepped up. It's great to get our first home win of the season. Now we hope we can win our final two games of the season."

North Andover's Alex Fleury ran a superb 16:28 on the Phillips Academy 5K course to place first overall and pace the Big Blue to a 19-38 win over Deerfield Academy.

Phillips 2, Deerfield Academy 1

Anthony Redfern came on in relief to get the last five outs of Game 1 and went the distance in Game 2 to lead Phillips to a sweep of Deerfield (3-1 and 2-1). In Game w Redfern was dominant (2-hitter, 11 Ks, 0 BB) but it took a run in the seventh for the walk-off win. Kai Marcos singles in Jack Penney for the win. In the opener, Travis Lane had 10 Ks, including the first nine batters of the game.

Phillips football shut out

Playing on a field saturated by monsoon-like conditions, the Phillips football team was shut out by Deerfield Academy in a 7-0 slog. Deerfield scored the lone touchdown of the game in the second quarter, and with the loss Phillips falls to 4-2 on the season.
