Austin prep dazzled by Hornets junior

At long last, North Reading got a breather.

The top-seeded Hornets shut out No. 12 Austin Prep, 4-0, in the semifinals of the Division 3 North sectionals at Fraser Field.

This came after a comeback first-round victory over Swampscott and a 10-9 thriller over Georgetown in the quarterfinals in which the Hornets scored three times with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

In the four years he has played lacrosse for Austin Prep, Steve DeLuca of Windham has been a part of a lot of winning.

DeLuca began playing lacrosse as a 6th grader at Austin because he wanted to follow in his older brothers' footsteps, both of whom played for the Cougars. His brother Anthony graduated in 2000, and his brother William graduated in 2004.

Pilkanis helps HW drop AP

Senior attackman Charlie Pilkanis scored two goals just 12 seconds apart at the start of the fourth quarter to give the Generals a needed cushion in a 7-5 win over Austin Prep. Ryan Gendreau added a hat trick for H-W (12-6) while Casey Colyer, Ryan Hanna and Jake Cotter also found the back of the twine.

Crusaders storm back to beat Austin Prep, stay unbeaten

The second-year Bishop Fenwick girls lacrosse team has proven it can win games. Yesterday, the Crusaders showed they are capable of erasing deficits on the way to victory.

Senior captain Casey Otovic rolled around the cage after a restart and scored the game-winner | her only tally of the afternoon | with 25 seconds left as Fenwick improved to 10-0 with 10-9 win over Austin Prep.

Andover blanked in shootout, eliminated from tourney

WOBURN | Andover captain John Hyslip did his best to look on the bright side.

"I think we played great tonight," said the senior, holding back his emotion. "Both teams played great and I am very proud of this team. The young kids stepped up and we played together."

Ipswich moves on

Senior guard Myles Layman scored a season-high 23 points, the same amount scored by teammate Peter Karas, as the Tigers (12-10) moved into the Division 4 North semifinals with last night's road victory.

Cowles propels Prep to win

Thanks to two goals from captain Christian Cowles, the Eagles (10-5-3) scored four times in the opening period, then buried three more in the final frame to win going away. Senior wing Steve DiCarlo of Danvers also scored twice for St. John's (both times on the power play), with Dan Haugh contributing a goal and two assists. Dan Lawton and defenseman Nick Riccio also tallied for the winners.

DiPanfilo's treys bring Fenwick back, over Cougars

The ice water flowing through Nolan DiPanfilo's veins last night was as cold as the temperatures in the teens outside the Bishop Fenwick gymnasium last night.

The 5-foot-9 Fenwick guard knocked down five 3-pointers | each one bigger than the last | to lead his team to a 52-49 come-from-behind win over Austin Prep.
