Triton starts Burgos era with win

It may only be the first game of the season, but the Triton coaching staff already has their guys running the two-minute drill to perfection.

Trailing 20-15 with just under two minutes left in Friday night's season opener against Randolph, quarterback Max Ciaramitaro and the Vikings got the ball around their own 40-yard-line and started marching. The junior QB completed 5 of 8 passes on that final drive, and eventually connected with Ethan Tate on a 15-yard touchdown strike with 40 seconds left to put his team ahead.

Ugly injury mars dominant win for Whittier

HAVERHILL — Whittier Tech football had plenty of reason to be excited following a dominant 32-16 win over Randolph High on Saturday, but the mood after was tempered after a Randolph player suffered a horrible leg injury in the third quarter and had to be taken off by an ambulance.
The injury came with 3:48 to play in the third quarter, when Randolph senior running back Charles Dillworth caught a 14-yard pass to bring the Blue Devils into the red zone. Almost immediately, players from both teams frantically started calling for the trainer, and coaches said afterwards that Dillworth suffered a broken leg on the play.
The injury resulted in a 40-minute delay, after which players from both teams offered words of encouragement before Dillworth was carted off to the ambulance.
"It was pretty scary and I felt really bad," said Whittier senior Julio Joubert, who was among those who spoke to Dillworth before he left. "I wanted to wish him my condolences so he can get better as soon as possible."
Randolph wound up scoring an 11-yard touchdown on the next play, but by then the game was already well in hand for Whittier. The Blue Devils scored once more late in the fourth quarter, but otherwise Whittier more or less ran out the clock.
The injury cast a pall over what was otherwise a terrific afternoon for the Wildcats. The star of the day was senior Thomas O'Mahony, who scored three touchdowns and led the team with 83 yards rushing and 61 yards receiving.
O'Mahony's first score came as time expired to end the first half, scoring on a 4-yard rush to make it 20-2 Whittier at halftime. Then, O'Mahony received the opening kickoff of the second half and took it 90 yards to the house to extend the lead even further.
Finally, O'Mahony added another touchdown through the air when he hauled in a 30-yard pass from quarterback Kevin Bradley to make it 32-2. Bradley also had a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and senior Corey DeFusco got Whittier on the board in the first with a 23-yard touchdown run, his first of the season.
Randolph scored its first two points on a Whittier safety early in the second quarter.
Whittier is now 2-0 for the first time since 2009. The Wildcats are at Chelsea on Friday at 7 p.m.

Slow start dooms Whittier

Whittier Tech made the long trip to Randolph and the drive hurt the Wildcats, who started slowly and fell 20-0.
"Actually had a strong second half," said coach Kevin Bradley, whose club shut out the high-powered hosts after halftime. "We really toughened up against a quality offense, and that was good to see."
Shamir Mejia and Marcus Cellamare led the charge. Offensively, Shane Mambro paced Whittier, carrying 10 times for 72 yards.
