Hillies win classic

Haverhill won a 3-2 marathon over Lincoln-Sudbury Friday to punch its ticket to the Division 1 state volleyball semifinals. The Hillies (19-2) were on the ropes throughout but showed champions hearts to pull out the 15-25, 25-17, 16-25, 26-24, 19-17 win. Just to make it even more dramatic, the Brown and Gold trailed 24-20 in Game 4. There were a host of heroes including Kya Burdier (30 assists), Morgan Flaherty (4 aces), Lexi DeOlivieria (4 blocks), Summer Zaino (18 digs) and Mia Ferrer Valdez (15 kills). "The team really hung tough," said coach Vincent Pettis. L-S finishes up at 16-7. The No. 2 Hillies take on No. 6 Newton North in the state semis. The Tigers, now 17-2, beat North Andover Friday, 3-0. The date, site and time are TBA.

Andover baseball falls in North semis

No. 6 Andover baseball fell behind early and could not recover, falling to No 2 Lincoln-Sudbury 7-3 in the Division 1 North semifinals on Friday. 

Star Golden Warriors (12-5) catcher Nolan Schirmer delivered a two-run double in the fifth. Anthony Teberio drove in the Warriors' other run.

Andover in finals

 

Jennie Wang won a three-set thriller at second singles, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, to help send Andover to the Division 1 North girls finals with a 3-2 win over Lincoln-Sudbury. Also winning for the Warriors were third singles Rachel Chen and the second doubles team of Sona Chaudhary and Sonika Chaudhary. The Warriors (14-0) will host unbeaten Acton-Boxboro at 2 p.m. Friday in the North finals.

O'Brien goes deep

Katie O'Brien smashed a 220-foot homer and No. 14 Andover hit the fence four other times in a dominant 12-0, 5-inning North quarterfinal win over No. 11 Lincoln-Sudbury. O'Brien, Molly Duval, Alyssa Sellinger, Adelaide Weeden and winning pitcher Jackie Giordano all had big days at the plate. Giordano (4-hitter) has given up just two earned runs in three tourney wins.

Central bows out

 

Central Catholic's unbeaten wrestling team bowed out of the Division 2 North tournament Tuesday, forfeiting to North Andover because of a lack of wrestlers as several starters were unavailable. Central finished the season with an 11-1 record while North Andover advanced to wrestle Whittier in Thursdays finals.

Andover golfers 8th

 

BOYLSTON — Led by Mac Lee, the Andover golf team finished sixth Monday at the Division 1 state tournament at The Haven Country Club.

Lincoln-Sudbury led the way with an impressive four-player score of 300, three strokes better than Xaverian. Perennial power St. John's Prep was third.

Raiders moving on

The upset run continued for the No. 22-seeded Central Catholic softball team. On Saturday, the Raiders took out No. 6 Lincoln-Sudbury, 7-2, to advance to the Division 1 North quarterfinals. Haley Merrill had a team-high three RBIs, and Sarah Janco added a pair of hits and RBIs as well. The Raiders will be at No. 3 Medford (Columbus Park) on Monday for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.

Astro overtime magic

Tied after regulation, Pinkerton lacrosse potted the game-winner in overtime when Chad Teresky buried a pass from Tom Sweeney to earn a huge, 14-13, cross-state win over Lincoln-Sudbury. Teresky led the Astros with four goals, and Alex Sturgess made 15 saves.
