Methuen gets tied

 

Methuen is no longer perfect, but it's still unbeaten.

Wrestling without standouts Nate Green and Matt Cabezas, the Rangers (17-0-1) whipped BC High (42-24) and Duxbury (44-23) but had to settle for a 39-39 tie against a solid Foxboro club. Trevor Abdallah had thee pins at 170 while Darius Franklin and Travis Manick were also 3-0 from 182 to 220.

Central survived the long bus ride and some late-inning drama to hold off New Bedford, 5-4, and move to 4-3 on the year. Seniors Mike Mercuri had a three-run inside-the-park homer, and Greg Marggraf added a crucial RBI single late. Reliever Johandy Gonzalez claimed the seven-out save, wiggling out of a 1st-and-3rd, one-out jam in the bottom of the seventh.

Methuen falters twice

 

Methuen won twice but also dropped its first two meets of the season, both on the last match of the meet, 42-36 to Milton and 40-33 to New Bedford. Christian Monserrat and Darius Franklin both remained unbeaten on the year despite wrestling in two weight classes, Billy Wehring was 4-0 despite moving up to 120 and Mike Golio continued his recent surge by winning three matches at 120.

Bishop triples her pleasure

Andover set state records in the high jump (Moira Cronin, Jess Salley, Alyssa Cummings) and the pole vault (triple winner Eve Bishop, Cummings, Abbey Pettoruto) and the 4x100 (Terra Organisciak, Vanessa Singleton, Bishop, Kayla Baldwin) mark just has to be verified. That was enough to earn the Blue and Gold a second-place finish at the Division 1 state relays.

Andover defends its title

Andover held off New Bedford, 46-44, to repeat as the Class A Relays. New Bedford almost tied up the Golden Warriors but the Whalers took third in the high jump and Andover held on. Adam Vetere was a double winner (4x400, 4x800). Connor O'Neill, Kerrick Stevens and the victorious 4x800 team of Scott Waller, Simon Voorhees, Chris Goodwin and Vetere turned in a stellar effort to take that event.
