 Kaitlyn Sawyer, the No. 9 hitter in the order, was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and had the game-winning hit in the eighth as Central Catholic (7-8) kept thits playoff hopes alive with a 7-6 win over Hopkinton. Abby Latham was 2 for 4 with a solo home run, two RBIs and two runs scored.

St. John's Prep makes state baseball tourney

At one time the St. John's Prep baseball team may have looked iffy as a tournament qualifier when it had records of 6-5 and 7-6. It had opened the season 6-1.

The Eagles, spurred on by Jordan Edgett's five-hit pitching over six innings, earned a ticket to the postseason playoffs for the 13th straight year by overpowering highly-ranked Hopkinton, 9-3.

Prep falls to Hopkinton

The Eagles (6-4) lost their third straight as unbeaten Hopkinton's offense couldn't be quelled in a 13-7 setback. Chris Carmain clubbed two doubles and drove in three runs to help the Prep draw within striking distance at 8-4, but the hosts answered back and put it out of reach. Also recording RBI for the Prep were Mike Yastrzemski, Greg Donahue and Andrew Gordon.

Methuen senior John Sughrue didn't get the match he would have preferred, but he had plenty of consolation yesterday at the Methuen Invitational.

Because he moved up a weight class to 130 pounds this year, there was no showdown with Salem star Trevor Dearden, but both Sughrue and Dearden came away big winners.
